Alpha Romeo Spider 2001 roof problems

Hi, I have a 2001 Alpha Romeo spider and the roof was working ok, but then the rear of the roof was lifting but the body part would not raise but i can hear the motor running. I have been told that you can solve the problem but opening the roof manually and that should solve it but the operator manual is confusing. Any advise welcome

Sounds like the clamshell catches aren't releasing. Open the cubby behind the seats, move/remove the trim on the rear bulkhead and you'll be able to see the motor that operates the latches. Tap the spindle with a soft-faced mallet and with a bit of luck the catches will release

ETA: said cubby is for storing such tools that are essential to the Alfa ownership experience

Might be the plastic poly cog in the motor. They get brittle and the teeth break off, once that happens, you hear the motor but nothing happens.
It is a DIY fix job so no great issue.
