Hi

Ordered a pair of MPS4S last week for my fronts (E89 Z4), and the guy from Tyres on the Drive (Halfords) has refused to fit them because "the car is set up for run flats, if you put these on you'll ruin your wheel bearings" - is this a load of BS?? I've had the same Pilot Sports on the rear since 2019 with no issues I'm aware of.

Thanks

LOL. Thought so! What's wrong with these companies??!

edit: Rang up, they said they would do them and I should have been given the choice, but can't come back out today so I've just told them to refund me. I'll pay the extra £40 and get them done by my trusted guys over the road.

Tyres on the Drive, never again!

My motto with them too now - had 4x tyres fitted with them last winter.

Wheels had been freshly powder-coated the week before, were just sitting in the garage waiting, each on cardboard and clearly different sizes.

1st visit - the guy turned up and told me I'd ordered the wrong tyres as they were too wide, I had to point out they were staggered BMW alloys. He grumped about the wheels being freshly refurbed, and finally did the job.

Test drove it and the wheel wobble was comical, and one of them let itself down flat in 48h.

2nd visit - different chap arrived, rebalanced the wheels.

Tyre still let itself down after 48h.

3rd visit - another different guy, finally replaced the valve on the self-flattening tyre, perfect since.

Their customer service number and the 2nd and 3rd fitters were excellent, but it turned what should've been a single visit into 3, a couple of weeks apart, with faff.

That sounds like an absolute nightmare. I've just checked with the guys I usually use and they'll do them because a bit of googling told me I'm not the only one to have this issue. Plenty of people get refused which is just crackers but there we are. Anyway went for the same PS4S's on the fronts, cost me a few quid more but I know it'll be done right and they won't be wrecking my alloys either.

Does anything need doing in terms of warning / monitoring systems when moving away from runflats? Or do they just use the same TPMS systems as non-runflats?

Never needed to do anything after I switched on my old 3 series or my current Mini.

Cheers. Just wondering as I have them on my 440i and they don't need changing yet (not have I found them giving a harsh ride) but will consider options come replacement.

(The car dealer I bought them from was adamant you shouldn't switch them to nons as it will mess with the car's handling)

It's called liability, and the company doesn't want it.

I have an E90 320d/ED -- it came from the factory on Michelin Energy Saver tyres (not runflats, unlike the rest of that range).

Every single tyre fitter tries to sell me runflats for it.

Whether it's ignorance, upselling (runflats are like 2x the price) or something else is irrelevant really.

Absolute BS!

Do not use this type of outfit. They are incompetent at best and could be dangerous.

In many cases...yes it does ruin them given the crap some people buy, then fit incorrectly.
