Hello all, my dad had an unusual incident in his S Class a while back and we can't seem to make any sense of it so thought I might get a better insight here!

Car: 2018 W222 S Class 350D LWB

We're not sure if there is a fault with the air suspension system, or whether this was just a strange fluke - but I will try my best to describe what happened;

The car was parked perpendicular to a kerb/pavement with the front facing in such that the overhang over the front wheels was above the kerb/pavement, with a good amount of clearance - for reference the area was flat and not parked on an incline. Left the car for approximately an hour or so parked and when he got into it to leave and began to reverse the car out of the space, the underside of the front bumper dragged against the pavement and kerb with enough force to break some of the fixings and leave the bumper slightly misaligned. He's taken the car into Mercedes and tried to explain the issue as best he could but they've not been able to find any fault and it will now require a replacement bumper and some other bits and pieces to put it right.

Just wondering if anyone might be able to help us understand what could have caused this, or could answer any of the following questions;

1. On start up, does the air suspension automatically raise to a "ride height" for driving, or is this always maintained whether the car is on or off? I wonder if it's possible that the car didn't have enough time to raise to ride height which is what caused the problem

2. Could he have accidently hit a button or changed a setting that would have changed the ride height on the car, which could explain why this has happened?

3. If we're barking up the wrong tree completely, and this could be entirely unrelated to the air suspension, what else may cause this?

Apologies if any of these seem stupid questions as I'm not familiar at all with how the system works, thanks for taking the time to read through and I'd be grateful of any ideas!

No experience of the S class suspension, but on my 2014 E class with air suspension it does often lower itself slightly a short time after being locked.
When I unlock the car and restart it I haven't noticed it immediately rising again.
