Buying a car with a Main Dealer replaced engine
Discussion
I had a similar issue with my Z4MC...and some buyers will be happy you've had a new engine (especially under warranty), and others won't - and others will be happy but will still play around to get a discount.
My engine replaced under warranty after an issue appeared immediately - i.e. on the drive home from the main dealer after they'd carried out an Inspection 1.
Got it recovered (after a spotty mobile technician spent 30 minutes revving the nuts off it to clear the 'fault') and then they spent 3 weeks trying to diagnose the issue - but ultimately BMW AUC warranty told them to replace the engine instead of spending more time trying to diagnose it.
A couple of months later the 2008 'market crash' happened, all work stopped (I was working abroad for a construction contractor) and I needed the cash, so put it up for sale.
Only needed to cover the remainder of the finance, but needed the cash quickly so accepted an offer from an independent BMW garage. 2 weeks later, on the day they were supposed to pick it up, they call me up and start asking about the engine...which was strange as they service/warranty history I'd supplied clearly mentioned this, and they started going on about how it would affect their ability to sell it or offer a warranty, so would like to reduce their offer.
Told them to f-off and kept the car instead - still got it 13 years later - and it was an extra 140,000 miles before the 2nd engine gave up (rod bearings).
It is strange that any other part that gets replaced - either under warranty, or as a maintenance item - is considered a good thing, but an engine instantly makes buyers think you've abused it.
