Diff & Gearbox Oil change

Hi all,

I'm looking to change the gearbox and diff oil (one to cover both from what i understand), and need to do it outside the dealer network.

The mechanic who looks after the car read in the workshop manual that this requires the OEM diagnostics tool in order to perform some sort of reset after the change.

Can anyone confirm this? And if so, any clue as to whether the OEM tool is required or a more generic one can also do the job?

I did my DB9 Auto over lock down. Reasonably straight forward. There are videos on You tube, from memory "aston 1936". I used a foxwell code reader to tell me my auto fluid temp to confirm exact level. Gearbox and diff are separate units btw. Tim

It's a 2009 V8 Vantage with Sportshift...

Thanks - i've seen this but i'm afraid the Vantage is different to the DB9. Thanks anyway

Manual Vantage 6 speed is straightforward if you can get underneath. Conventional fill and drain plugs, and a filter to wash out. Make sure you take out the fill plug first, so as to be sure of being able to re-fill.

So did the change yesterday and sure it did need it!!
Used Motul Racing 75W-90, which i think made everything much smoother (especially downshifts from 2nd to 1st)

That filter does look old. And what are the particles sticking to it? Metal shavings?

One other thing and somewhat after the event, but I recall reading somewhere that as it's a transaxle with combined gearbox and diff, you had to be careful with oil choice as some of the "normal" diff oils didn't play well with the phosphor bronze of the syncro rings, and the LSD doesn't like some gearbox oils

That's a very mucky filter and drain plug. Mine were as clean as a whistle when I changed the oil at 40k miles.

Had the gearbox oil changed at 38k and the difference was really noticeable. Cold and hot the change is so much smoother and slick. Well worth the cost. Feels like a different car!

Its also well worth changing the asm fluid if its a sports shift. I did mine in the Vanquish last month. It was very black. I will be doing it annually from now on. A lot cheaper than having to get the hydraulic shift system fixed.

Indeed...the mechanic did some research and suggested the Motul oil mentioned above, as he has tried it in the past. Works great so far!!

Same here! A really noticeable improvement! Glad to hear you had the same experience, as i was worried mine was a placebo effect
