Changing work/employment/role/goals after Covid?
Discussion
Covid has caused a lot of people to re-evaluate their work life - either through redundancy, working from home, or having time off to think about the daily grind.
So, out of interest, are you going to make work changes as a result? Start a new business, a side hustle, change jobs completely, retrain?
Or is it all the same but with different socks on?
Note this is not asking if you're going to work more from home. This is asking if you're going to make a change in your job, or look for different opportunities.

Was doing financial stuff on contracts for different companies for the last 5 years since moving back to London.
Lots of work in all different sectors but the last contract was in travel (corporate travel etc.). Due to finish June 2020 but from March 2020 working from home. Kept getting the contract extended by three months at a go until December, then just had enough as it was soul-destroying. Also had to drop down to a four day week from May.
Decided to take a break from everything since January, (enough savings).
Wife suggested applying for film extra work, which seemed a laugh.
Got first part with two days filming and half a day costume fitting at the start of June which was amusing although long days in '70s nylon and polyester clothing.
Had another fitting yesterday for a Victorian period film which is a couple of days shooting next week. I have a natty top-hat for this one.
Money's fine for what I need for a few days work a month, it's interesting chatting to all the different people doing the same thing and it's better than being in a crap office crunching numbers.
Semi retired at 54 now.
Double-booked last week so missed out on being a zombie . Gutted.

One thing Covid did do was give me more time in which to be bored.
One thing I did to alleviate some of that boredom was take a closer look at my pension funds. As part of this, I made the discovery that the statutory pension illustrations telling you how much you might have on retirement are a complete joke, since apparently they assume you will get an annuity, which practically nobody ever does any more!
As a result of that, I've now gone from thinking that I would be lucky to be able to retire before I was 75 to the much happier position of knowing that so long as I can make it through to 55 in gainful enjoyment, then worst case scenario, I could afford not to work again, and if I stick it out until I'm 58/59, will be able to afford a really comfortable retirement!
Thanks to all of that, I'm now significantly happier, and starting to look at retirement destinations.

I also decided to retire. I have one of my 3 pensions already paying so no real issues financially. We also are moving and downsizing since the kids are gone.
Looking at your profile, were you already in Herefordshire before moving and downsizing, or is that the target destination? We're looking at possible retirement locations in a rough triangle between Abergavenny, Tewkesbury and Shrewsbury...Gassing Station | Business | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
