I'm not into sport and I really don't enjoy live music (I listen to lots of music, just not live).

I have a close personal connection to the moon landings, but little interest beyond that.

We have a weekend in London planned for later in the year (I lived there and hate it, but my wife likes it in small doses), and that will include a show of some description. I'll be paying

My wife has to give her parents' birthday and Christmas gifts to charity (fk knows how many bloody goats they now own), and refuses to do that for me. We already do charitable giving.

Stuff for my car comes under 'things I have already bought for myself'.

I face exactly this conundrum.

Ultimately I can buy better stuff for me than anyone else can, and it's effectively me paying for it anyway, so why go through the effort for a suboptimal outcome? Plus there are things that I only want her to do for me which don't cost money, and fortunately our marriage hasn't decayed to the point where she declines.

Last year, however, was different. She got one of her friends to do an embroidery picture of our dog for me. It's completely unique, I absolutely love it, and it was a complete surprise!

I think the key thing there is that it was a complete surprise. That's what made all the difference, and therefore just by getting an answer on a thread like this, it would ruin the enjoyment.

For a recent “big” birthday my eldest gave ma a photo album of pictures of me going back to when i was 3 months old, She’d spent ages going through my mum and dad’s photo albums, my grandads photo albums, various aunts and uncles, as well as my in laws (her mum’s parents. Pictures of me at primary school secondary school, wedding, graduation, the kids being born, holiday pics spanning the last 4 decades.

I can honestly say it’s the best present I ever had. I think it cost her £30 but it did take a lot of time/patience

I take your point, but we do stuff like this for each other all the time. I've never been bothered about my birthday, even when I was a kid. I didn't mark my 40th, or my 50th in any way at all, and she feels bad. She wants to mark my birthdays with things I'll appreciate.

I usually have a big book or something similar on my wishlist, but this year, the only thing on it is a decent cheese grater. Except she can't buy me that becsuee the only reason it's on my wishlist is that when I asked her for a specific cheese grater last year, she bought the wrong one.
