Lordy lord. I was wondering if this would get a part 2 soon. :P


Booster on the road:



Apparently this won't do a reentry burn like a Falcon 9 booster.

It'll come in like a wrecking ball, then fire up for the landing only.

I think this particular one won't do a rentry at all will it? It's not the orbital booster, just for testing? Losing track a little bit!

Yes, this one is just for static testing. I mean in general they won't do a reentry burn, according to Elon.

Yes, this one is just for static testing. I mean in general they won't do a reentry burn, according to Elon.
This one is for static tests only as stated.

Superheavy will do a flyback burn and is intended to land next to the launchpad when in service.

For the first launch they are intending to do the flyback burn, re-entry to ~30miles off shore from boca chica and soft touchdown in the water.

There is a difference in that Falcon 9 flips over, does the boost back boost burn to head back to the landing site, a reentry burn to reduce reentry speed/temperature and then the actual landing burn. Whereas Elon is saying that SuperHeavy won't require the reentry burn, seemingly because it will stage from Starship at a lower speed compared to the second stage of Falcon 9. Essentially because Starship is reusable they can afford to make it more complex by more doing more of the heavy lifting so to speak. Whereas with Falcon 9 you want the second stage to be as simple and inexpensive as possible because you're throwing it away each time.

Burn time is comparable, ~169 secs.

Starship should have ~20% more deltaV than F9 2nd stage, but it needs to be capable of landing.

Superheavy mostly empty will have significantly more surface area than an F9 booster, so maybe they can use more drag due to stainless being more stable than carbon fibre at temperature extremes.

So maybe Superheavy can tolerate a higher re-entry velocity than F9.

The Falcon 9 fuselage is made from an aluminium-lithium alloy. The black interstage at the top of the booster is carbon fibre.
