Interesting video about Vulcans getting through US defences on two successive exercises.

Edit: wrong link! Will go find the correct one.
Sorry.

Fixed it : it's only 12 mins long

I'm guessing this is related to Operation Skyshield? One of my ex RAF colleagues mentioned this story to me a few years ago.

Will give it a watch.

Cheers OP.

I loved reading about the red flag exercises out in the US. We were a cheeky bunch like when we had two Buccaneers under a Vulcan that evaded radar and carried ont to attack the target after the Vulcan had been 'shot down'.

Also there was the Vulcan flying so low, when it banked, it left a groove in the desert.

My dad would have loved to watch this. He was really into aeroplanes, particularly the Vulcan and Victor bombers.

He was in the Royal Observer Corps and when we went on holiday when I was a kid it was usually next to a RAF airfield so he could spend a day or two watching the planes! He always insisted the RAF were top notch and way above the Americans. No idea if that’s the case.

I got a wee lump in my throat when I spotted the upload date though, 18th September 2020. The day he died.

I was reading a story the other day about an Aus sub sneaking through US defences to 'sink' the destroyer target on a recent exercise. wink

I think someone on here shared a video recently talking about the bucs on a red flag in the states flying so low the f14s couldn’t shoot them down, they even recreated it on some simulation, amazing

A supersonic aircraft such as an F-14 is designed to fly supersonic at high altitude. In the thick soup that is the lower atmosphere, they struggle and drink fuel. A Bucc was designed to fly at transonic speeds. It’s a slippery bugger at Mach 0.95, and economical as well as highly manoeuvrable.

If you set an F-18 after a Hunter flown by Lorti in Canada, the Hunter will plummet to a few hundred feet and be gone. Funny.

Bare in mind exercises are generally set up so something happens, one side will always get sunk.

Top defence against a diesel electric boat is just to move around more often and faster than it can follow

I can see that.

This one was pass through a choke point and photograph the target.
Then broadcast "land down under" at full volume through the hull.

The cook was instructed to be "a noisy bugger" at the start of the exercise, the crew were heavy-footed, etc., then they went silent at the opposition watch change.

I can go find the clip if anyone's interested.

Didn't the Norwegians do similar recently too?

Well worthwhile looking back through the other videos, mainly WW2 stories, but some interesting things.

He has a couple of other youtube channels too.
