I know zilch/zip on watches so hoping you can help:-
I was recently given these watches - can anyone tell me more about them - date manf'd etc
>

>
Both Omega's have kept great time [over the past week or so] I believe the smaller one to be military it has 'www' on the back of the case, [surely not worldwide web!!] The gold one has 'Seamaster' engraved on the rear of the case, the stopwatch seems to work OK on this too.
>

>
The black seiko is my favourite, it and the 2 citizen's look to be unworn and have the original boxes etc.
It's nice to feel and wear something which ain't battery operated, a bit like feeling, handling & playing a vinyl LP - instead of a crappy download, which exists only in the ether

The right hand watch on the first photo is an early 1970s (1972-1976) Omega Seamaster chronograph Ref. 176.007
ETA it looks gold plated so likely the model number is 176.007 MD
If it’s solid gold it’s 176.007 BA and very rare. You can tell if the case back is gold (on the solid gold model) or steel on the gold plated model.

The one on the left looks to be an RAF issued pilots watch from WW2 era…..
British Army, surely. It’s one of the ‘dirty dozen’. WWW is Watch Wrist Waterproof .The British army got watches made by 12 different manufacturers (dirty dozen) omega was one of the first,
Again it’s pretty collectible.
On the back it should have www then an arrow and below that the watch’s case number and issue number,
Likely a ww2 watch pretty cool eh?
The blue nato strap is just a modern one.
thanks for the replies sorry for delay in reply - here's the face & rear pics of the gold omega.

I've been looking at ebay there are several of the WW2 military 'www' watches for sale seems they sell at around the £1K - mine has the inverted Y and a 2 other long numbers do these relate to year of manufacture etc..
The gold colored watch has 8 independant moving hands/dials, it must be very complicated internaly for his to happen - amazing craftmanship. I wish it was stainless I'd be happy to wear it, the gold is waaay to glitzy for me though. Nothing like the gold watch on ebay though, are you certain its from the 1970's.? Any Idea's of how many of these were made?
What about the other 3 are they just modern day cheap 'timex's' what date/era are these from? - I had a timex when in school, it kept crap time, I've checked these 3 they all keep great time, so modern tech has improved these newer Mech watches too, for now I'm wearing the seiko I really like it, it replaces my 30yr old seiko kinetic guigiaro divers, which has been awesome.
Thanks for your help on this

Yeah the omega watch pictured with the steel caseback is a gold plated seamaster chronograph 176.007 MD (MD indicates gold plated rather than steel or gold) they were only manufactured between 1972 and 1976. The gold plated watch either came with a gold or brown dial (face). >

If you google or eBay omega seamaster chronograph 176.007 you’ll likely see loads of steel ones as they were more popular. The trouble with the gold plated ones is that gold tends to not be as popular in resale and gold plating ages pretty badly and can look pretty tatty.
The movement ( calibre 1040) was one of omegas more complicated ones and actually has loads of great functions.
Here’s a technical guide from the 70s for the movement
https://www.calibre1040.com/wp-content/uploads/201...
Sorry I don’t know anything about the others.

Thanks for that, The link was ace
Any ideas why Omega made gold plated watches?, as has been mentioned they look naff after being used for awhile like the one I have does? Were they cheaper to buy than the SS models?
All that craftmanship making the complicated watch movement, ruined by poor electroplating, are the gold plated models SS under the gold plating, if so it may worth geting the gold plating removed?
Thanks for all your Help&info so far

Gold plated?
Because it looks like solid gold, but doesn't cost as much. It's usually good for twenty to thirty years at least.
Underneath they're often brass, I don't think you can gold plate to SS directly. You'd have to nickel plate first.
Removing the gold plate would remove 80 to 90% of the resale value. If the brassing worries you (that's what it's called when the gold plate wears away to show the underlying brass), get it replated. It should not be hard to find people who will electroplate gold. You would be advised to get a proper watchmaker to remove & store the movement before sending the case off for work though.
That's not a cheap watch. It would be a shame to ruin it by attempting to remove the plating. It might be worth having a word with the likes of STS to see if they can refurb the case and service it, rather than using an independent watchmaker and internet replating co.

Thanks for that - It's a shame that the watch discolors which makes it look really naff, I wouldn't re-plate it gold since I'd never wear a gold or [gold plated] watch. You're probably correct its some kind of brass/bronze/gunmetal type alloy used as the base metal?
Nevermind it cost me SFA so can live the rest of it's life in my cupboard. The OmegA military watch is excellent and I'll certainly wear that. SS is much cooler than fake gold/Gold ever can be IMO
Maybe it may be possible to get an SS case for it and swop over the mechanicals?
ANy Ideas on the ages of the seiko or the citizens?

I actually like the tatty gold plating on the seamaster chronograph. These are vintage watches and I think it adds to the cool 70s vibe.
I wouldn’t be in a hurry to mess with it tbh, especially if they have any kind of significance like an inherited watch etc. You never know how your own views will change over time too.
I’ve got a couple of my dads old watches that are out of style but I’d never sell or do anything to them.
My watches aren’t that well looked after either and have all kinds of dings and marks on them, my kids know how they all happened and when they become their watches it will all be part of the history.
How did you end up with all these watches?

Thanks for that, they were a gift off my sister, originally the omega's were her FIL's, and I understand he also had the seiko and citizens given to him as [unwanted] presents, they were passed to her hubby after FIL died a few years ago - [my BIL] - her hubby died of covid at start of pandemic and the only watch which she wanted to keep was his personal Kinetic seiko which like mine he'd had for ~30 years . So I have no personal attachment to any of them, if I can wear them, great, and ATM the crappy gold plated omega is the only one I won't be wearing [unless I can get a SS case for it] if not it will live in the cupboard at great expense
I wouldn't sell them though, but will try to wear them to show my sis I appreciate 'em. they have no £value to me but they do interest me as ancient [now obsolete] mechanical devices and will be talking points down the pub - if and when pub's get back to normal

It's been a few months since my original post:-
Have been contemplating how to proceed on the gold plated seamaster. Wife suggested using it over our hol's [2 wks] to see how it performed, Well it was very good on the timekeeping only lost less than a minute over the 2 wks, so very acceptable for everyday use. I absolutely hate the gold Case & Strap though so that has to go.
Having read the PH Watch page since my original post, I noticed several mentions of full case refurb's done during a full service at Omega, on S/S watches would similar happen to my gold plated case [Would it be re-plated for example]?
I have a few other Q's which hopefully you lot can answer.
1. Would it be posssible to replace the existing Gold plated case with an S/S or Ti version during the service? If so any idea's on the cost?
2. The existing 'crystal' is plastic and has a few marks on it, would or could this be replaced with a Hard Glass Crystal during the service? If so how much will this cost?
3. I've seen several different coloured faces on this seamaster model - could my existing face be replaced with a different colored one, I'd like blue or black?
4. Assuming the case swop is possible I'd need a new strap to match the new case - how much would this cost?
What exactly do omega do to the watch during the service?
The wife suggested Trading it in against a similar used S/S cased model, How much P/ex would I get and how much would I have to pay with the watch - Approx any ideas in £'s ? Do you think this is feasible?
I'm a total newby to watches and really like the 1970's seamaster - just not in gold color, so hope you can suggest some possibilities

I very much doubt Omega are going to be interested in swapping parts for you. They might change parts if they have to, because of the stock they have, but I think they are more likely to decline to service it. It would also be detrimental to the value. They're not going to change crystals etc. An independent might.
The service will be stripping it down, cleaning it, replacing worn movement parts, re-oiling and reassembly. They might polish the case but perhaps not on a plated watch.
An easy way to tone it down would be to put it on a leather strap.
If not, sell it and buy something you like. If you search the reference you will find sale prices. A gold one with a gold face sold for 1600USD recently. A service is going to cost you remember so if you don't plan on keeping it I would probably sell it on in it's original condition.
That military issue is marvelous.

Clearly my thought about getting Omega to fit an SS case, a new blue face, and glass crystal were dreams, IMO the price of a service is not VFM for my old watch
Thanks for the other suggestions - I've trawled through the net looking for a SS version of mine for sale that I could go and view and maybe P/ex, sadly nothing at the mo in UK [unless you know different?] Do you know any UK stores to check online that you can recommend which may do a deal?
>
The suggestion of a different strap was good, and with that in mind Wife & I went down town this morning to try a few, ha ha despite 5 different high st jewellers, 2 market stalls, none had any leather watch straps for sale, only a few S/S expanding bracelets!
>
There's also a porn/pawn shop with plenty of expensive watches for sale, including a £15.5K Cartier, so popped in to get an idea of P/ex valuation against something in their window stock, sadly the gent behind the counter knew SFA about watches, and wanted to send mine off to head office to get a valuation - Um, no thanks!
>
Finally went into a 'Cash Generator' store, the guy there was eager to buy it, but at £55 we politely declined.
>
I've not given up and will look on fleabay etc. Maybe I'll get lucky.
Thanks for the help thus far.

Yes I would park that idea. I personally would not send a vintage watch to Omega, or any of the big brands, as they are not interested in maintaining the originality. There is a thread here which suggests some people you could send it to - https://omegaforums.net/threads/vintage-omega-rest...
I'd buy a strap on amazon, you just need to measure the lug width (or look it up).
As you have experienced not many people are going to be knowledgeable about vintage watches. I did a deal with Parkers Jewelers in Sheffield via email, they deal in vintage watches and are worth contacting. They were excellent to deal with and it would give you an idea of the value.

Found a decent strap - WOW it transformed the watch from a draw filler to an everyday User Many thanks for that simple suggestion, The wife and I being Watch Newby's would NEVER have thought of that, Only problem was finding a store who still sold straps, Was well worth the effort

Will still be on the lookout for a blue faced SS version - the wife can then have this one
