Private plate retention/V5

Am I in for a long wait here, anyone had any recent experience of this?

Had to retain a reg number by post, couldn’t do it online due to the vehicle being untaxed or in the trade for a period of time at some point in the last 5 years. Sent off relevant paperwork needed and a cheque, frustrating thing being can’t collect new vehicle until the new log book arrives on original number

At the moment it seems to be anything that can be done 100% online is virtually instant and anything that requires something sending to the DVLA is taking forever.

We’re on week 8 of waiting for my son’s provisional licence to come through.

Yep, sorry to say been waiting now for 4 weeks + for a V5. Dealer I bought from insisted on posting off old one rather than transferring car online and so weeks pass and nothing. All the while can't assign the private reg to the new car.

I've been waiting 6 weeks now, still taxing my old car that I sold to a dealer, which he in turn can't sell because it doesn't have the original reg.

Do you still have an obligation to tax it?!

I was thinking this about the tax that was on the one I bought. I had to pay as new owner when I bought the car, but all the while the DVLA delay processing the change of ownership, the person on the V5 is also paying to tax the car until the rebate is issued.

I can't SORN it until I get the V5 back. Absolutely no idea what difference it makes, or why it's my problem, if the car spent part of its life untaxed before I bought it.

This is exactly my thoughts, don’t see what the difference is in why it can’t still be done online.

One presumes in 2 weeks when restrictions come off, DVLA will have to go back to full staff and do things "properly" again?

They are protesting over stuff that has been on going for months, I can’t see them forgetting about it in 2 weeks lol!

I had this issue, as the car had been SORN'd in the past couple of years.

As i'd basically sold the car, I talked the guy into buying the plate as well, or wait for weeks for the car.

If you have the green slip simply go online and do the bought a car part of the system. You may find, as I did, that the dealer neglected to do the part about you buying it. This now means I cannot put my plate on retention online although I could put it on!

Would I not lose the plate if I tell them I've sold it before they've changed the reg back?
