Hello again and sorry before I start.

My sister has arrived with her works lap top. It'll start up and goes straight to her works log in page.
She types the first letter of the log in OK but when typing the second, a random set of letters/numbers appears.
She's rang her IT dept who suggested it might be the keyboard. (Why when it worked OK when she left home yesterday but I suppose it can break).
I have tried accessing in safe mode pressing F8 ( some internet hints suggest F4 for an HP so tried that too) but upon switching on it just goes to the works log in page as before). Pressing the MS menu key has no effect.

Is there something she may have inadvertently switched on or off?

thanks for any advice.

hasn't been dropped has it, or something spilt on the keyboard?

Does it have USB ports, do you have a USB keyboard you can plug in?

Has she turned the number lock on ? Otherwise, as above, plug another keyboard in.

Another option if the touchpad works okay (or you have a USB mouse but not a USB keyboard): it should be possible to turn on the onscreen keyboard from the Ease of Access menu in the bottom right corner while on the login screen.

If you mean she's at the normal Windows 10 log-in page, then click the "Ease Of Access" icon in the bottom right to use an on-screen keyboard.

No, when it switches on it goes straight to the University front page where she has to insert her sign in/name and password. First letter of her sign in is fine, when typing the second letter it just inserts about 5 random letters/numbers.

We've a wireless keyboard, will try that (assuming it has a USB socket).

Don't think it's been dropped, just placed in the car driven around then taken out the car.

Is it just the second letter key that triggers it, or any second character?

If the problem occurs with a USB keyboard then ...

Is the laptop running Sophos Home with keylogger encryption?

Try Windows Key and Spacebar, it toggles through that programs options if it's installed, does nothing if it's not.

Thanks to all.
FreakUK was quickest I think.

Conversation:

Me: I hate HP stuff
Her: Oh I like them, dependable work horse
Me: Not that dependable, it doesn't work.

Later

Me: I've had a suggestion, plug in Tom's wireless keyboard, it should bypass the laptop keyboard.
Her: Oh at home I use a separate keyboard.....

a few minutes later

It works!

Another Pistonheads clan success, thanks everyone.
