Had my already troublesome 09 E90 318i dropped off yesterday afternoon after having a reconditioned engine put in after the last one seized. was on my commute home and then shortly after leaving the oil pressure warning light came on and around 10 seconds after the engine started to make the dreaded knock. nursed it down the road a bit more to a safe spot and it’s there currently. car does turn over and sounds a little less ‘knocky’ now but i’m just totally stumped as to how a freshly built engine could start knocking on me. not been ragging the car at all and done at most 45 miles in it. any thoughts on why? not happy.

reconditioned can mean a whole host of things, from a full rebuild to a clean with a pressure washer?

Those bloody things are just useless. I fitted a used one about three years ago to a 120i Coupe. I replaced the chain assembly, new oil pick up tube, crossed the i's and dotted the t's.

Of course, a year later the oil pump just seized for no apparent reason and broke the chain. It got fired into Copart after that as a non runner. As well as the usual N43 problems, I've seen oil pump sprockets shear off and pistons break up.

in all honesty i’ve had it with the car. it’s been in the garage longer than i’ve been driving it. read all the N43 horror stories and thought i’d be fine but couldn’t be further from it. will see tomorrow if the issue is down to the engine builder. if it isn’t i’m not putting anymore money into it and it’s going straight on ebay/stripped for parts. i did give the chain an inspection and the car still runs so hopefully it’s as minor as low oil pressure and knocking can be 😆

So, is this a warning for potential buyers to steer clear of any 09 E90 318i they see in the coming months with a 'recon' engine, as it's a pile of ste?

How many miles did it cover from collection to break down?

i wouldn’t do that and anyone with an ounce of sense would hear it’s clearly knocking. it’s either gonna be sorted or sold for parts.

yeah it does. i wonder if the engine builders didn’t put any oil in it before their drive and filled it up after hoping nobody would be any the wiser and that’s what’s caused this.

If there was no oil in the engine when they first started it and went for a drive, my understanding is that it would not last very long at all.

The M111 was a proper engine though.
