Has anyone done either of the Ferrari 355 or Lamborghini Diablo driving experiences at Goodwood Circuit with Mithril Racing?

A £120 voucher gets you 3x laps in your chosen car and it seems that is all, ie. no exploratory laps in a hot hatch first to learn the braking points, where to turn in etc.

I find it a little hard to believe that you just turn up, jump in a car like this (albeit with an instructor) and go and do 3x laps. I can't imagine you get a lot out of the experience as it would take until the 3rd and last lap to start getting into it, surely!?

Just wondering if anyone can speak of their experience(s)...

I did it earlier in the year a present from the wife. Although it was very short I really enjoyed it. You are right that there is no tuition just helmet on striaght in the car and off.
The diablo is I think way ahead of the 355's and would suggest that it is the better choice.

Hi

Whilst I did not do the Ferrari experience with Mithril, perhaps the following comments will be useful. I have done lots of trackdays in the UK and Europe. I have spectated at GW many times and thought I knew the corners well from the sidelines.

I did my first 4 laps of Goodwood a few weeks ago and although cones were out on the circuit, the sight lines for corners are "interesting"

The conditions changed on each of my laps (rain!) and I was obstructed by slower cars with inexperienced nervous drivers for several laps anyway.

Would I rate 3 laps in a Ferrari as a good experience for the money - No.

Any of the "experiences" available I view as bad value for money.

Its not that the providers of these things are trying to rip you off...nope...I'm sure its a fair price for the vehicle and the wear and tear. Its just that small numbers of laps provide no learning time - so you don't get a lot out of it.

Always choose an "experience" based on the number of laps you get. Best value I've found is Thruxton - 14 laps in an Elise in two blocks of seven.

But if you have *any* track driving experience I wouldn't go for an "experience" at all. Nope. Go along to Jonny at Bookatrack and hire a Caterham off him on an Open Pit lane day. Two of you can share - bringing the cost down to something bearable..(say £300 each).and you will get lap after lap after lap - quite possibly fifty or sixty each in a day...depending on the circuit.

I am completely unassociated with Bookatrack - I just think their service is excellent.

My ex did this a while back. It seemed to be a lot of money for very little, to be honest.

I think what you have to understand is that the driving experience is to experience the car on a race track and not so much driver training or tuition. 3 laps doesn’t seem a lot mind, but it is a Diablo and it is driving Goodwood. I think that Mithril is the only place you can drive a Diablo?

If you have experience and want quality track time not in your own car then BaT’s caterham hire package can’t be beaten – and I’m no way associated with them

I completely agree. Having also done a wide range of things on road and track, I'd also recommend avoiding any of the "experiences".

Alternatives I would especially recommend include:
RideDrive: www.ridedrive.co.uk
Cadence: www.cadence.co.uk or (01949) 844 449
Don Palmer: www.donpalmer.co.uk or don@donpalmer.co.uk

Frankly, doing a whole day with any of these folks in your own car, irrespective of what you drive, would be a miles more fun experience than a handful of laps in a Lambo round Goodwood.

I have driven with all three, and also done the Mithril thing, so speak from experience.

Have fun, whatever you decide.

Yes.. did the 355 experience recently, a present from a relative. Three of us had a lap with an instructor followed by a lap driving myself in an alfa 159. This was followed by a 3 laps in a 355. Never having done anything like this before personally I found that you are absolutely right....to get all the different instructions for the racing line in 2 laps in the Alfa was beyond me. Then I was in the 355 with a paddle gearchange and found I was just starting to get the hang of it on the third lap when it was all over. For me it would have greatly improved the experience to have warmed up in an Alfa with a paddle shift along with a couple of extra laps. The 2 laps in an instructor driven Cooper S to wind it all up was fun.
I knew I hadn't driven the 355 particularily well on my first couple of laps and was a little disappointed to have this confirmed when the guy sorting out the official photo's struggled to stifle a laugh at seeing what looks to me like a classic 'dickhead' sign from the instructor to the photographer after one of the laps. £270 later I suspect there are more rewarding driving experiences to be had for the money!

I did my ARDS test at goodwood at the same time people were doing the ferrari and lambo days.

I all honesty your not aloud to go anywere near fast on these days, The 355's and diablo were getting in the way of me in a diesel alfa.

For £100 i'd do one of the novice trackdays arranged by MSV (or others) as i feel it would be alot more fun.
