When a Controlled Explosion Goes Wrong

I clicked on that now I’ll be on a watch list. That reminds me of a particular 4th of July fireworks show in San Diego a few years ago. It was supposed to go on for 17 minutes, but they accidentally set them all off at the same time:

Nobody was hurt, fortunately.

Why didn't they just explode a few at a time? Doing them all at once is a stupid idea
I read that they (LAPD) have a self imposed safety limit of 10lbs and thats what they loaded onto the truck. IIRC their TCV is rated to 10kg of TNT.
So either the TCV failed because the 10lbs of what ever they put in had more power than 10kg of TNT or their TCV had a fault meaning its pressure rating was lower than 10lbs of what ever it was they put in.
Assuming it was just fireworks that needed 'disposing' surely a skip full of water would have done the trick, or even just a hose.
Actually blowing the things up in the street?!
As it was the TCV probably made things worse, just like any other time you put something that goes bang inside a strong casing.

I read elsewhere that it was some of unlabelled metal cans filled with explosive material. They cut into one (presumably with a robot) to check and then removed them to the truck.Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
