OK so having had a shot of Tesla 3 Dual Motor the other day I have to admit that I'm coming around to the word of EV. That's one rapid car, albeit not the last word in handling.

However, we live out in the sticks in Scotland and do actually need some sort of 4wd SUV / truck - crap winter (and usually summer) weather, dirt tracks, dogs etc.

I'd also like something with a decent amount of poke and good range.

Accordingly I'm quite taken by the Rivian R1S / R1T but what is the collective thinking about these, and particularly when they will actually be available here in the UK.

Given all the investment I'd hope that they get it pretty much right. If they do is the RS1 likely to be a viable EV alternative to the FFRR?

I did have a quick search on there but the PH search function ain't exactly helpful.

Thoughts / comments much appreciated.

No opinions?

Seems like quite an interesting EV option if you want something a little different.

It’s a new product not even with customers yet, some very interesting packs to adventurise it. Not sure what else you were expecting?

I think it's going to be a great vehicle. It won't get to the UK for a while yet - 1 to 2 years? Wait for reviews of the production US version before adding if to your list though.

Couldn't live with the front end styling personally, looks like something from a cartoon.

I quite like how it looks, and the stuff released so far is quite promising.

It's not something I'd use personally, do not really interested from that point of view. As others have said though, this isn't even with customers in the US yet, so I think you'd be in for a -long- wait to get one in the UK (RHD and all). As we're a small market with the steering wheel on the wrong side, I reckon you'd be looking at 5+ years as I strongly suspect they'll be supply limited for a while, so no need to venture outside the US.

Yup very fair point. Mind you, as a 700 bhp fully electric FFRR alternative it really caught my eye, but I agree I'll probably be waiting a good while.

And of course the $75k US pricing will likely morph in to £100k for the UK which would definitely reduce it's appeal!

I think they look great and from what I can see from the gestation of the models, they have put in a lot of thought into it. They have made what seems like a quality product and should be pretty well resolved at its release. Early drives and looks from journalists seem to back that up too. But then again, they want a lot of money for the base models, so it better be good. While a lot of people will drop $80k+ on a pickup, existing gas engined ones are real multi-purpose tools. So this one needs to be good in a lot of areas to get those buyers out of their Ford’s and Chevys and into a Rivian.

Styling is a little odd, but I think they nailed a simple but rugged look and it’s certainly much more conventional compared to the Cybertruck. I think it will sell well. Really well.

Available in the UK? Good question and I am sure Rivian have a plan. This is the same company that is doing those Amazon delivery trucks, so I am sure it’s engineered for an international market. However, it’s going to be as big as a Ford F-150, so it depends on where you live and if that works. It’s wide, so thin streets and parking might be a problem. But if you can make it work, why not? Oh and turning circles and so on will be easier with the Rivian, as they have thought of that and have a number of features to help.

Can’t wait to see the reviews coming soon, as customer deliveries start in the next few months. It’s going to be an interesting time.

Rivians are huge, they have said they are not really suitable for UK roads, they are exspensive and have been developing it forever. I suspect it will be years if at all the UK gets them.

I think ford knocked it out the park with the cheaper and avialble sooner F150 lightning
