PS5 External Hard Drive...
Discussion
I have bought a toshiba 2TB external (USB3) HDD and it is working fine with my PS5, just be aware that you can only run PS4 games from the external HDD. You can save PS5 games to it but then need to move them to the inernal SSD to run them.
Hoping the next firmware update will sort this issue as the internal SSD can only hold about 5 decent PS5 games I think.

Ah that is what I was worried about, is there currently nothing that will allow me to save PS5 games externally? Hoping the next firmware update will sort this issue as the internal SSD can only hold about 5 decent PS5 games I think.

I don’t see how PS5 games will run externally without extreme performance loss though. The fast internal SSD is the big selling point. Hoping the next firmware update will sort this issue as the internal SSD can only hold about 5 decent PS5 games I think.
I’m sure Sony will find a way to sell you a compatible one though.
I use one of these though 2 TB are available. As noted above you can only run PS4 titles from the external drive but you can move PS5 titles between the internal and external drives (faster than re-downloading them).
The PS5 has to check the drive each time I turn it on though (takes a couple of seconds) which I haven't found a fix for.

Well indeed that is the point isn't it? I mean, I can play Skyrim and it takes 6-8 seconds to load a fast travel on the PS5 but it used to take 30-40 seconds on the PS4. There is little point in having the PS5 with slow loading......I’m sure Sony will find a way to sell you a compatible one though.
I can't quite believe there isn't a solution for this yet. Once I have a couple more PS5 games it will be a PITA to have to keep deleting them from the hard drive...
Even the fastest external USB SSD won't give you any more than about 1100mbps which is about 5x slower than the internal PCIe 4.0 SSD. Even TB3/4 will only give you 3000mbps, which still may not be enough for Sony to 'certify' for PS5 games - plus I don't believe there's a TB3/4 port on the PS5.
In theory any 'fast enough' PCIe 4.0 NVMe stick should be usable in that extra internal storage slot, but that functionality has been enabled by Sony yet (was supposedly coming in the summer) - but expect to pay £150+ for a 1TB PCIe 4.0 m.2 SSD with speeds to match the built-in SSD.

I have "budgeted" £200 or so to get a 2TB external if I have to go a little over so be it...In theory any 'fast enough' PCIe 4.0 NVMe stick should be usable in that extra internal storage slot, but that functionality has been enabled by Sony yet (was supposedly coming in the summer) - but expect to pay £150+ for a 1TB PCIe 4.0 m.2 SSD with speeds to match the built-in SSD.
But I am really disappointed in the PS5 launch. No great games, very few actual PS5 games at all so far, then no external hard drive either..........

I believe it was rushed as the Xbox was ready to launch and would have taken all the holiday season sales. As it turned out they needn't have worried as demand for consoles exceeded the supply of any one company. But I am really disappointed in the PS5 launch. Crazy that Sony still haven't got their act together on the NVMe SSD expansion slot - that was supposed to be a big selling point for PS5.
At least MS have a (pricey) proprietary expansion card available for Xbox Series and have had so from day one. You can have 2TB of internal SSD storage on a Series X if you have the cash.
Though it doesn't seem like there is much that truly makes use of the faster SSD speeds to stream assets in on demand. Sony game loading speeds generally aren't faster than Xbox and barely faster for back-compat PS4 titles compared to loading them off a decent external USB SSD.

Yup the whole thing has been a shambles IMHO. So few games (at least ones I want!) for it too... But come Oct/Nov there will be a few I want (have pre-ordered) thus will need a bigger SSD as well...Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
