Insurance..what's going on??
Discussion
Paid £750 last year with Liverpool Victoria. Just checked what the renewal cost will be this year - £1350. Are these people real or what? Nothing has changed on my side so why the nearly doubling of the premium?
I had the same with Norwich Union last year and that's the reason I dumped them.
Also, I need extended European cover. I work abroad for about 5 months a year (in one lump) so I need to have the car with me. Nobody I've tried seems to give more than 90 days cover in Europe. Anyone know who does??

I had a broadly similar experience with Liverpool Victoria when it came to renewal time in April. I looked elsewhere, too, and came up with a saving over last year's premium and better all round cover from Saga.
If you happen to fit that age bracket, it's a helluva good deal! They also seem to have no qualms about overseas trips.
Good luck!

Hi - ironically Liverpool Victoria give the best free insurance cover abroad and will cover 180 days per year in the EU at no extra. This might still be your best deal as others will charge a kings ransom for extended EU cover. As a cross check try www.stuartcollins.co.uk in Swansea as they can arrange 12 month green cards.Alternatively try Footman James in Birmingham.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but how do they know the car is out of the UK for more than 90 days? Surely you pop back on the Eurotunnel every 89 days? Nudge..nudge...
If you have to make a claim they will ask for proof of departure/arrival from the UK which will be the ticket you used to travel. No proof, no cover.

Rumour has it that LV do not want to cover performance cars anymore and would prefer to stick with the lower end of the market. I had a quote from them and it was nearly £700 up on what I ended up paying with Privilege
I'm told its fairly common for insurers to look at their risk spread and try to balance it if they think its too skewed.

Thanks for the tips. Tried Footman James and they wanted more than £1800 with only a total 35 days European cover in any year.
Waiting for Stuart Collins to get back to me.

I have just insured my F348 through Ann Manning. They will give me 3 months European cover included, plus extendable for a cost. I do not know who is providing the cover yet as I have not seen the paperwork so far.
Interesting, yesterday they quoted me only 45 days European cover and I needed a tracker. Sounds like the insurance industry in the UK is keeping it's "cowboy" reputation.
I don't know if this will be any use to you, but I insure my 993 down here in Spain very reasonably (just under a grand, and having written off my BMW last year). It's on English plates, and the cover gives me an annual green card. Not sure if the green card is just for Spain or is Europe-wide. I think the end insurer is Lloyds of London (could be wrong there though), but it may at least be worth a call to them?
BMI Insurance +34 952 813 314 (ask for Sandra, and say I referred you)
Good luck.

Well, the AA told me they have an overseas policy just for people like me, gives unlimited overseas use as long as you have an address there (which I have)!
So, I go through all the details again (after entering them on their on-line quote website...........sorry, can't get a quote because of the type of car
Basically, spent a day and a half and got no where, this with a no convictions, max NCD, garaged car, and 45 years old. What a load of b*ll*cks!

Got a quote from Stuart Collins - nearly £1700
For goodness sake, the car is much safer out of the UK than in, these companies really are milking a captive audience.
I had my UK registered Audi TT over in Belgium, local insurers refused to touch it on Uk plates. For the first year I used Eagle star gold policy which gave full european cover but then they were taken over by Zurich and stopped it. After that the only person I could find who did it was Stewart collins and they charge me 1200gbp per year
I sold the Audi now but in one thread I did ask PH member Insurance Jon if he would do full euro cover and he said he should be able to sort something out - so might be worth checking with him. You can often find him in the business section. If you are successful in finding anything please let me know as I am probably about to buy another UK car)
Funniest thing is that taking out normal car insurance here in Belgium I automatically get a full annual greencard without even asking for it, with absolutely no restrictions on it at all - smells like a profit making scheme by uk insurers to me (having said that uk insurance is SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than here)

I was with LV last year and paid £665 (Full NCB protected, 32yrs old, clean licence and B98 postcode).
Renewal was £1050.
Norwich Union came in at £640 for this year (May)
Ended up using
Peart Associates 0870 240 2972 £595
Policy is a High Net Worth with Royal & Sun Alliance.
Could be worth a try.
