Then just take this in for a minute.

S has today been promoted to management (no, I won't say the wage) and I was intrigued as to how her income (well, ours, I'm currently not working) compares to the worldwide household average.

Gobsmacked to discover we are now in the top 1% of earners. We are not rich, her salary is 5 not 6 figures. I would bet that 75%+ of you meet this result, have a look, and if you think things are tough, in the big scheme you are comparatively blessed.

Not a rant, lecture etc, just an eye opener I thought I'd share.

And for those who genuinely do have salaries that look like phone numbers then maybe simply quietly reflect and realise just how bloody fortunate you are.

I've had this discussion many a time with youngsters in my family who are earning the average wage and complain how poor they are. They never believe that they are in the top 5% of income in the world.

Of course it's not as simple as that as cost of living comes into it as well but even going purely on the UK it's surprising how many people who consider themselves middle earners at best are well into the top 10% in the country.

Brings back memories of that guy on QT who refused to believe that 80k a year put him in the top 5% and thought that every doctor and lawyer in the country earnt more than him.

Hence the word 'comparatively'. When 1 in 3 worldwide don't have access to clean water a late phone bill is a wee bit insignificant.

That calculator would be more useful if it asked for income before tax, and showed the contribution to taxation as well as take-home.

I would think so, you only need to net 70k (household) to be in the bracket.

I didn't, no. Without working the take-home out, I know from comparing her outgoing salary we'd still be top 1%.
