Same age/engine as mine, bloody good car if you ask me, the odd Alfa niggle, suspension bushes (replaced under warranty), top engine mount (under warranty again), slightly strange clutch pedal feel (sorted to more than my satisfaction under warranty), we have done 60k and the average over it's lifetime according to the computer is 45MPG and we don't hang around. 51MPG on a leisurely run is easily do-able.
It handles well, goes well, looks much better than most Euroboxes, is something a bit different, but not too different, economical, fantastic interior (I've still not found anything in the same class that I would rather have).
To my knowledge the only potential problems are if it is a Lusso the suspension has a hard time keeping the heavy (engine) front end in check, my Veloce appears fine, they have a tendancy to scrape the sump guard on speed humps unless you are careful so you get Golf/Passat/318 drivers trying to enter your boot over them. The usual suspension bush problems as mentioned above.
So ya pays ya money......

I would recommend one. We have a 2001 2.4 sportwagon veloce. A good car, not up to build quality standards of a BMW, but has many positives.
I never thought I would like a diesel but the 5 cylinder unit really does sound nice, especially when giving it some beans.
Good cars, mine has had no major problems apart from a new turbo and clutch but has been serviced well. It's on 106k now, and going strong. I believe some can suffer from gearbox snags, but as above, mine has been faultless...ish.

Changed mine for an M-Jet 156 in March after 97k miles in 3 years and apart from bushes etc. it was great. Gave mid 40's mpg, sounded good but be careful over bumps - I managed to crack the sump on mine (luckily repairable)! Dealer is a gem (Stoke on Trent)and that always helps.........
