One of my fb ''friends'' posted 'Why won't this fly die? It's like deodorant wasn't meant to kill it or something?'.

What the hell did they mean by this - particularly 'or something'? Were they just being unnecessarily cruel/mean?

Made me feel a bit uncomfortable reading it tbh - surely there must be less painless ways to go (although it seemed that this fly put up a fight!)

He's probably referring to the fact that you can't buy fly spray anymore, not even for ready money.

What was the general tone of the post (I am autistic, so not clearly obvious to me...). It looks bizarre - was it slightly cruel to write?

A can of Raid with the black top rather than the blue top is what you want. It will drop most fly type things out of the sky as soon as they are within spray zone.

Waiting until they land and turning your cigarette lighter right up works pretty well - allegedly!

I suspect he was just trying to be witty.

Fly swat, Maximum prejudice, I sit here on my office chair swinging round all like,

I used to try and let them out but though they can find their way from outside via a 2 mm by 2 mm gap the presence of a wide open door or window is impossible to exit by, in fact have been dealing with one doing my fly bouncer job and another one has come in via the window I was using to try to get the original one to depart via.

So, fly swat, no messing just whack hard and repeatedly against the window, caught one full on yesterday in the air with a lucky shot that connected like it was finals at Wimbledon and made quite a noise, the small delicate creature was carried full pelt to the floor with me thinking it was a sure fire kill, it gathered its thoughts as I came to scoop it up and then flew off and continued its aerial display.

There is a happy medium between killing them and making them splurge across the window, fly spray may be easier but the smell makes me heave, and I like the sport. small game hunting ?

Whenever I kill one, within ten minutes fly central dispatches its replacement, its like a law of nature there must be at least one of the feckers harassing me as I work, the old fly into your ear or a close fly past your face as you swig your brew must be taught at fly Top Gun, along with land on your hand and advanced sandwich landings.

Just kill them, if you drive a car you are a fly murderer anyway.

I used to swat/spray. But now I just leave windows open and they disappear soon enough.

The ‘or something’ bit is just a sort of figure of speech, similar to when people use the word ‘like’… “and she was like well you should, and I was like, well I don’t want to so she turns round and is like well sod off then and I was like OMG blah blah blah…”

Basically it’s irrelevant to the story. The plucky fly’s will to live was enough to overcome the deodorant’s power to execute, and they all lived happily ever after. Except the failed deodorant operative who had to go on Facebook to complain.

Tell him to buy some fly spray.
Hopefully he'll spray it under his arms.

Remember my dad finding a wasps nest above my bedroom as was getting a hell of a lot of them coming in, he hooked up a small vacuum cleaner with the nozzle just near the entrance so as they flew in or out it sucked them in, odd puff of wasp killer into the hose and left it running a few hours, job done.

If you try to kill them with deodorant , you are essentially trying to gas them with butane. Not particularly poisonous , so in an open space it will probably dissipate to non lethal levels.

Tesco matt dashboard cleaner kills flies/wasps in about 3-5 seconds. No idea why. I found this out by sheer chance when cleaning my car! I now keep a can in the office and if a wasp gets in then I give it a quick spray it normally takes off and then drops out of the air within a couple of seconds and dead before it hits the floor. Weird.

On a plus, the office smells nice!

Flies breathe through their skin, fly spray stops them from breathing, so in theory any sticky aerosol spray, furniture polish, etc will work, when i was a mechanic there was a guy used to roast them with brake cleaner spray, he'd turn the spray into a flame thrower (using the straw) and roast them in flight, one second a healthy fly, the next a wee lump of smouldering charcoal, good enough for them, i like/dont mind most insects/bugs, spiders, snails, beetles even earthworms i'll try to save but cant stand flies.

We have vaulted ceilings in our current place, they seem to come in through the windows then fly upwards then never seem to leave

Disgusting when you go for a walk see them crawling over a turd, then come home and you have some etc

I got one of those blue lighted fly zappers you see in a deli, have it mounted on a google smart plug, when a persistent fly won’t ps off, we turn it on and it zaps then pretty quickly

We also have a jack Russel who would happily destroy anything in the pursuit of the flies, so we had to do something

It's humour.
He's stating that deodourant isn't killing the fly. Then pretending he doesn't know that deodourant isn't supposed the kill flies.

There's a chance he's made it up and there is no fly.

A good reply would be: "Of course deodourant is supposed to kill flies. How hard are you hitting them with it?"
(Pretending you don't realise that he's spraying the fly, and asking how hard he's hitting the fly with the can of deodourant.)
