Anyone else pinged by covid app after FOS?

Here we go. The trick ( so I’m told ) is to turn off contact tracing on the app. Scan the Q.R. code, you get a tick, people see the tick and that’s all they need. If you leave the key swapping function on, you’re asking for trouble ( so I’ve been told). This is exactly what I expected to happen, and I think we’ll get a veritable avalanche in the next few days. Ohh deary me. I did give my opinion that I believed they got this wrong, and they were happy with that, I also understand what pressures they were under to get the event running this year.

You don't need to have signed in. If the app is on, it is using bluetooth to look for other phones every five minutes or so. If one of the owners of those phones that was in proximity to mine later puts through a positive test then your phone will get a message to say that you have been exposed and that you need to self-isolate.timbo999 said:

It’s a sneaky function that runs in the background. It sniffs out other app users in your vicinity. If you are within a set distance of another app user, for a set amount of time, the apps swap digital ‘keys’. If someone tests positive, it’s easy to look at who’s app was swapping ‘keys’ with who. Exactly. Nothing sneaky or needing a 'trick' to turn it off.People who have been in probably close enough contact with others with a positive PCR test have been pings. Isolate so you don't give it to someone else.
I just wish we had this pre pandemic days for the goons who would float about with a horror show of flu or other skanky illnesses and spread it to everyone!
Yes, me too, also from Friday. Have tested myself and still clear but I guess the system works, even if flawed in some ways. A chap I know who was working there over the weekend has actually caught it. I guess it’s inevitable that there will have been some positive cases there despite best efforts and guidelines. Still glad I went despite now needing to isolate for a few days!

Well there is / it is. You can ( apparently) still get in to where you’re going, because you’ve got a little green tick to show when you scan the Q.R. However if you have contract tracing turned off, it can’t swap keys. That’s a concession that had to be added for reasons of legal data protection and privacy control. It was begrudgingly allowed, because it had to be. A lot of people don’t realise you can do the Q.R. bit with the key swapping bit turned off, if you wanted to.Man-At-Arms said:

It’s absolutely worthless really. I mean you get pinged late, in all that time, you’re going around potentially spreading the virus, which is exactly what it’s designed to reduce / stop. 40% of your period gone through the slowness of the app

Depends what you want out of it, I would want to know if I have been in proximity to someone who has a positive PCR test. I would not be keen to be a risk vector to someone I know who is severely immunocompromised, nor someone else I might see soon who is undergoing cancer treatment. Each to their own. It does not appear that people are instantly infectious, so there would be some benefit to limit contacts for people for several days after, as well as trigger them to get a PCR. I can't square off your concern about the app not performing and meaning people are 'going around potentially spreading the virus' yet see the app trying to prevent that as sneaky / option to turn off.

When i had to self isolate last year after being "tracked and traced" i had to self isolate from the time the contact was made with that person, not from when i was called.40% of your period gone through the slowness of the app

I totally agree that any delay in the notification process reduces the effectiveness of the system but I think you're overlooking the sort of timeline that's probably in play;-Day 1 - people go to an event (while showing no symptoms and having passed an LFT the previous day).
Day 2 - an individual starts to show symptoms and books a PCR test.
Day 3 - PCR test taken
Day 4 - PCR test results are positive and the track and trace app notifies anyone who has been in close contact with that individual in the preceding days.
The actual time it takes for the track and trace app to do it's thing could be almost instantaneous once a positive test result is recorded, but the time it takes to get the PCR test result could be several days after the close contact event which is actually the route cause of the delay.

I was in Edinburgh for the weekend with some friends, came home, had a wedding reception on the Monday and it wasn't until the Wednesday that I was notified. Only had to isolate for the remaining 7 days from the time of last contact (Sunday apparently).
Obv some very guilty feelings about the wedding reception and hoping that we weren't the cause of a superspreader event.
