Hey,

I am at the end of converting a Peugeot Boxer 2.2 to a camper van and it's developed a horrendous knock.

Took the car to a couple of garages and seems the bottom end was the cause. One of the garages was a diesel injection specialist, they did some minor tests and said injectors seemed ok from initial tests, but to get a definitive answer, needed to go off for testing at £300 for the set! He said the noise is noticeably worse from the bottom, and with the injectors looking ok from his testing, it wasn't really a good use of £300.

Got the van in at an engine specialist now for a rebuilt engine to go in, and they've come back and said the van needs injectors, clutch and water pump too. I can stomach the clutch and water pump as "whilst you in there jobs", but the injectors are £800 and from what the garage has told me, they are completely goosed. Didn't even get passed the electrical tests before they put them in the test kit.

Which made me think, if they were that bad, surely the van wouldn't run correctly?

If you were deaf, you wouldn't know there was an issue, hardly any smoking, no loss of power, same mpg.

The garage that did the initial testing of the injectors are shut until Monday, so I can't get hold of them to see what their testing was, whether it was electrical testing on the injectors or just a normal diagnostics machine.

So I'm wondering what peoples opinions are on whether you think with injectors that are way out on the electrical tests, could still perform and allow the engine to run normally?

TIA

Prob Piezo injectors, and the piezo stack is failing electrically. Most of the time they will work OK, but sometime they won't shut correctly. Could well be this that has goosed your engine.

They'd normally do a leak off test and see
How many miles has the van done?
Engine was used in everything, transits to Jags

Van is on 78k, but the engine has definitely been apart before, not sure what for or when, didn't spot it when I bought the van.

I've heard these are terrible engines. If my driveway had been a little longer, we'd have probably gone for a LWB Crafter or Sprinter, keep thinking if only now!

I don't think they were particularly terrible engines at all. the ones I've come across have stuck it pretty well, and some have not been loved. But the piezo injectors of any model can be flaky. On balance, I'd prefer the old solenoid ones, much more relaible. (But of course that's a bit late for you).
Get a replacement engine, and replacement injectors in there, replace the clutch and DMF, blank off the EGR, replace the belts, and it will run tickety boo for 100k miles I would think.
Early replacement piezo injectors are really almost a maintenance item these days.
