Shopify stores and VAT (passive-ish income)

Anyone have any experience with selling worldwide from a Shopify store - specifically VAT accounting?
I'm VAT registered in UK and Ireland, but manually account for my existing sales at present (a pain, but manageable).
Wondering about selling some other retail stuff in greater quantities, but as it's early days don't want to spend a fortune setting up a system that may not generate a penny. Does shopify help?
Essentially trying to set up some more 'passive' income streams having spent my life as a consultant - new territory for me, but a good challenge. Unfortunately the online information is completely dominated by 'gurus' who will sell you their magic pre-packed dropshipping business formula (buy it now! only 50% off!), so it's a bit hard to find practical advice.
