Hi gang.

Eventhough my 5.0 litre is reasonably quick I am about to upgrade the power of my 95 Chim 500 HC. As I am looking for a serious upgrade I believe the only option (apart from buying a cerb or something newer) is to increase ccm. Now, does anybody know where I could buy a reasonable 5.3 litre engine.

If anybody have experience with that I would highly appreciate some responses.

Thanks

V8 Developments offer upgrades up to 5.5 liters, and I think John Eales, TVR Power and all the other RV8 specialists ofer upgrades to 5.2/5.3 liters. They don't come cheap though.

I know bugger all about engines, but going from 5 to 5.3 litres is only a 6% increase in capacity. Is that going to be worth more than about another 20bhp?

Different diff ratio and road legal track tyres?

I can go to 5.4 with stock liners but it's a pain to do. You need a turbo and a set of nice forged pistons in your motah. Then you will have some serious grunt.

Boosted.

No, but at that level of tune 20bhp is hard to get.

Or a boosted LS1?

Yes (I hope so). What I know is that I tried to pass, he then was accelerating hard and catched up as long as I was in 2nd (I even came into rev limiter), as soon as I got into 3rd the rice box lost ground.

Thanks to all for the answers.

No but at the same time, the cam is changed, compression ratio increased, the heads worked on, the induction system replaced and the ECU replaced and so on. End result is about 80 to 100 bhp more than standard (real world BHP) at a cost of about £100 per bhp...

So you mean yes and all of the other things will add another 60 to 80ish bhp.

I reckon a finished a LS1/LS6 (standard) with aftermarket ECU will set you back installed 10k,you will have min 350(ls1)400hp(ls6)at the wheels!!!
Exrta bhp up to 500hp will be more like 30to 50ukp(top of my head) per bhp, after that your talking reel steel.
A 5.3 rv is where the LSX started.

Spot on Paul - then do you want T5 or TKO.

This things are WAY..... beyond RV8's.

Had a 5.2/5.3 (think it's 5260 cc) installed a few months ago. Indeed, not cheap, but it did 312 bhp/350 lbs at the wheels on the rollers, which is about 345 bhp and 380 lbs at the fly; and it wasn't run in yet.

And there is still room for improvement too: with an Omex system and ACT manifolds it should do around 380 bhp and over 400 lbs. Real bhp/lbs that is!

I'd say if you're thinking about a bottom end rebuild, the 5.3/5.5 option isn't a lot more expensive than having a 5.0 again and I'm told that with the 5.2/5.3 one can use far better pistons and rods.

No I meant no.

Induction and fuelling need to be able to cope to exploit the extra capacity. If you want an extra 20 bhp then it is more cost effective to play with the induction etc on a five litre rather than simply increase engine size. If you want real power, do everything though.

.. or you can *keep it tvr* and fit an AJP8 4.5 5k for the engine, reckon on the same again to get it in and mapped.

The 5.3 is an absolute stormer of an engine, with enough grunt to pull your arms from their sockets!
But...as Green V8S says...it doesnt come cheap!
The last 5.3 we did made over 400 BHP on Austec's rollers (before the nitrous), but this was in conjuction with a few other mod's from the likes of Tim @ ACT and Mark Adams.
It's still very driveable, not to much of pain round town but it also needed to have a "one off" billet flywheel to mount a special clutch to it.
There are a lot of good people out there who can offer this kind of thing, but be warned...it can lead to a lot of heartache, frustration and many meetings with your bank manager!
Have Fun!

OK, have it your way then, 5000cc contributes 75% of the power and 300cc contributes 25%.

I still maintain that if Jamie can get over 400 bhp from a 5.3 then he can get about 380 from a 5.0.

Somebody who seemed to know what he was talking about once told me that the 'sweet spot' for all out power was in the region of 4.5 liters for a RV8. As you increase the capacity you increase the friction drag, and as the induction restrictions become more significant there is less payback (in terms of increased charge in the cylinder) to compensate for this. The bigger capacity engines also have a longer stroke which means they can't rev as well as a similar spec shorter stroke engine. As it was explained to me, if money is no object and you are going for absolute peak power it is possible to get more power from a 4.5 ish than from a bigger engine. I'm sure the bigger engines produce more torque and probably more *usable* power but the peak numbers are smaller.

This conversation occured several years ago and the goal posts may have moved slightly since then, but I suspect that the principle may still hold that for absolute maximum power you don't necessarily want the biggest capacity it is possible to get.
