Am I imagining it, or is there a 'New Normal' where everything is either a f
k-up or is at a lower standard and this is so universal that it is considered to be acceptable?
eta: it doesn't really bother me, although once it would have, which is my 'contribution' to the general malaise.

Yes - absolute st-show all ways round.
Either: out of stock / poor service / working from home (ie: not available) / ridiculous prices

That was a rant about 2008. I was meaning NOW. For instance, back in 2008 you phoned someone only to be told "he's not in today/this week or at a meeting or at lunch or off sick or....."etc etc
Now, even if the number's available, because the person hasn't yet moved to comm by email pingpong only or text or whatsapp or some equally futile nonsense which frequently remains unanswered anyway, you get an answering machine to leave a message on, or, even worse, an adventure into a world of never-ending menu options, NONE of which, by some magic, are the thing you're actually calling about.
Yesterday I had to phone a ginormous company called "The Davies Group". It took a 1.5 hour call, 4 separate people and the worst hold-thing I've ever encountered to get someone who even understood why I was phoning. The 'hold thing' was a brief news and weather summary (about 20 seconds long) which I must have listened to 200 times over by the end of which I was near f

Most Pub chains local to me are already complaining that Welsh gov are insisting they retain table service for the foreseeable, apparently all the staff that they sacked when they couldn't open have found new jobs and don't want to come back, I guess that was left out of their data analysis.
Roads, busier, more digital enforcement and blanket reduction in limits, especially here in Wales, 20 has become the new 30 in Town, lots of our Motorways and major A road have long 50 sections and there's chatter that 50 might become the new default max limit. Speeding is becoming as socially unacceptable as Drink driving was 20 years ago, unless you're a d
head which means you can drive in bus lanes at any speed you like, abandon your stbox over drop kerbs and generally act the ahole. Customer service, pretty much awful now, retailers worked out that it was cheaper to make Till and customer service staff stock shelves at the same time, some shops have self-service tills, some don't but for the sake of 3p on a tin of beans or an extra half-mill for the CEO, I'd rather they employed a few more people, and this was long before Covid.

heads about, lots of them, new ones, empowered by our new more Populist Politics, some people now feel they should be able to do whatever they want, whenever they want and to hell other people. Like adult age babies, they are unfamiliar with the word 'No' or shame. Only this morning I witnessed two toddlers in their 30s arrive at my local shop cum Petrol station, park their stbox diagonally through a disabled parking space, because it was the closest they could possibly get to the door, march in loudly swearing at each, maskless of course, grab whatever red top they 'read' along with whatever 'energy drink' they prefer and then roar off, blaring their horn at someone who dared get in their way as they exited the wrong way. No one was shocked, it happens all the time. I've been lucky enough to travel a lot in my 41 years, I've spent months at a time away seeing some great places, but I've never wanted to leave the UK to live, we love to moan about it, but it's a nice place to live and raise a family, or was at least.
We're planning on Emigrating in the next 18 months.

Everything is several orders of magnitude worse than ever, and you can tell this because you feel relieved when something happens as it's supposed to - as it's now the exception rather than the rule.
