I am not a fan of modern tech cars, to much to go wrong, reason the Mini R55 is going as its just been a plain pain in the rear for the last £500 to not fix it.
Infact its back in the garage to be looked at again.

So off we go car shopping and find a cracking car for SWMBO, a Citroen DS3 2015 plate 1.6 BlueHDi diesel. so runs Adblue. no problem to me but now not sure as the dealer said its a benefit to have the Adblue for doing short runs as it keeps the system cleaner. So now after we left a deposit for it, i know stupid to believe the dealer, and then read up first on this. I thought i should soooo

Now i know Adblue is to keep the CAT clean for emissions etc but not the DPF will be kept clean.

Now as SWMBO only does a 4.5mile trip to work, then back again its not getting upto temp.

If we did a run out every week to clean out the DPF and give a good run would this benefit the car ?

BTW we have had many petrol cars and all mayo up and did engine service every 6 months / 2000 miles ish. And older diesels but not DPF and never had a problem with them. Newr cars scare me lol.

any help folks please whats best to do to run the car happy smile

Thanks C Faffer

Our diesel is mostly used for the school runs with just one longer run at the weekends. During lockdowns, it was more of a challenge to keep the battery charged, though I did take it for a dual carriageway run now and again just to get all the temps up properly.

Don’t know about Citroen but there are lots of apps available to monitor the DPF on VW Audi products used with a dongle in the OBD
They let you know when a burn off is required

So why buy a diesel then? It's widely recognised that this is worst case scenario for diesel usage.

A small petrol engine would be far more suited for this purpose, and far less of a worry.

+1 (Or electric if you can charge it at home.)

As above. Diesel was absolutely the wrong choice of engine.

I wouldn't consider any sort of modern diesel (and I'm a huge advocate of them) for such a short trip. We have one, but it does a 45 mile round trip every day on the motorway. I took my EGR out a few weeks back and it was immaculate.

Petrol is really the correct choice here.

Two things spring to mind here.

You want a reliable car but have bought a Citroen.
Your missus does 4.5 mile to work and you bought a diesel.

I can't comment about Citroen having never owned one but I would never buy a diesel for such short distances. It was a real shame my O/H did just before I hooked up with her, it was almost enough to put me off - but not quite smile

My friend had a DS from new.

Before it was three years old the air conditioning failed.

Warranty didn't cover it because the pipes were corroded.

Citroen offered a contribution, but refused to pay for the whole lot.

It was the first time I'd heard of air con pipes corroding to failure within three years on any car.

Anyhow, rant over about stroen,, you don't want a diesel for doing such short journeys.

Do you have an old fond memories of lower tech cars?

I like to go old and lower miles/well looked after if I can......but then I don't have any fear of appearing poor/old fashioned etc I've dabbled with newer but don't really find a 5 year car vs a 15 year car (especially with similar miles) is much different on the risk curve.

High Mpg and low annual tax tends to see you into more modern/complex cars so the lure is strong I get that, I looked at 2016-17 Fiat Tipo's (1.6 diesel) and Ford 1.0 eco boosts as a potential good low running cost options. But ended up going the much old shed route.

As said above, petrol for that usage profile (or electric if the budget stretches to it). And Japanese or Korean for reliability.

Just 'true' will do.

OP, buy something Japanese / Korean with a petrol engine instead.

So I believe we chose wrong car lol Besides some folk not liking Citroën. Have to say we have never had a problem with the French cars. Had a few over the years.
The other diesels we had didn't have DPF as said, or Advlue. And took the sales person word for it being good for what we need. Thats really why we chose it.

Best see if we can have the holding fee back I think.

A good idea, especially as you received poor advice from the salesman.
