Which watch as short term investment/safe
Discussion
I’ve got spare funds sitting that won’t be needed for at least a couple of years for a project.
It’s sat in the bank doing nothing and I wondered whether it might be an idea to at least get a few nice watches then look to trade back out when needed.
Question is…
If you had to pick three watches all sub 40k that you think would at least hold their value what would they be?

Would probably buy something like a Rolex Explorer and keep my fingers crossed.
That will cost you around 9k alone.
The other one which may be worth considering is the Tudor Blackbay Harrods edition. If that gets discontinued it will rise in value but again its "if".
I dont think buying a watch or 3 as an investment is a particularly good idea personally.
If you can buy a Rolex at an AD for RRP then maybe but buying grey market now is going to be a gamble.

The only route IMO is Rolex (with the exception of Datejust/Explorer’s) at RRP from main dealers but I think you missed that boat a long time ago.
Why with the exception of Explorers? The Explorer 2 fetches a healthy premium over RRP.Pupp said:
The Exp II is presently sought after but , for ages, was the one you could buy from an AD along with the Milgauss.
I’ve got both; I like both… neither were an ‘investment’ however
You may have not bought as an 'investment' but the Explorer has turned into one. White faced Exp II sells in the grey market for £12kI’ve got both; I like both… neither were an ‘investment’ however

The Explorer I then. Pretty easy to pick up and not a particularly safe place for anyone’s money.
Ok, you've completely lost me.Are you saying that the OP should buy an Explorer I because it's NOT a safe place for his money??
No, I’m not saying that. Obviously.
Like most have said , if you could walk into a dealer and pick up a Steel Sports Rolex at retail , then you would have made at least 3 thousand on a Submariner 41 mm no date. Maybe a little bit more. However you could stick your name down on as many lists as you can , and hope for the best.
I am on the list for a 41mm sub , ive bought previously though from that particular AD.
I paid 11350 for a Sub date 41mm. And these are selling now for between 11 and 12500. Its a difficult question because if it were that easy everyone would be doing it. And they are ! The grey market is awash with sports Rolex 4grand or so over retail.
You could invest in a stocks and shares account such as Parmenion , Ive made about 6.5 grand in just under a year with one of those.
Invest a bit and buy a nice sports Rolex. They are only going up!

Anything truly investable isn’t going to be available to you as a straight ‘walk-in’ purchase. You’ll need a healthy relationship with an AD and even then a lengthy wait is still likely.
Personally, I’d be looking at investing any excess cash in a proper investment vehicle. The watch market is far too fickle and with the exception of those unavailable purchases at RRP from Rolex/PP/AP, it’s too much of a gamble.
Anyway, watches are for wearing and enjoying, not investment opportunities.
All IMHO obviously.

If an item is a guaranteed investment, especially in the short term, the clever money has already moved in. Buy something you might enjoy that ‘might’ have investment value, and that way you can’t really lose. Whether it’s a watch, a classic scooter, an old Hasselblad… doesn’t matter. If you have that much to spend, enjoy it. You’ll be dead in a few summers whatever you do.
Your main options on that front are rolex, patek (5167, 5711, 5712) and, surprisingly, most hodinkee limited releases.
The sh*tshow that is rolex games is discussed in depth elsewhere. Patek is highly variable depending on locale but your chances of a 5711 are very very slim indeed....
The latter do your research first when announced and then fastest finger first.
On the flip side, there are a lot of watches to NOT buy new for investment purposes. These you can buy used after someone else has taken the initial hit however, and you will make your money back after having worn and enjoyed them for a few years, but thats not really an investment as such is it.
