South Africa, more than riots
Discussion
Very surprised there’s no thread on the ongoing collapse of South Africa.
The Goverment is now talking about this being more than just a series of riots, it’s looking more like deliberate destabilisation of a country.

Most of the family who lived there have now moved back here, the rot started with 'positive affirmation' also known as blatent racism.
We watched Zimbabwe collapse, and did nothing, We'll now see the same descent in SA and do nothing.
The help they need will be denied by Africans no longer there and a comfortable generation of jezza thinkalikes who will never need to live where their hatred and bile creates hell on earth.
Way to go guys.

My dad spent many years living & working all over south Africa & other parts I find if very sad what is happening over there
I was born there & spent a happy childhood growing up with amazing views & lovely people
SA seems to get closer & closer to the point of no return each year
Very similar although was my grandparents.I was born there & spent a happy childhood growing up with amazing views & lovely people

Was great when I visited as a child in the early 90’s and got progressively worse, as did their economy…exchange rate got far better (for us!) though

Just glad that my family left South Africa when they did. Although are we seeing the seeds of similar in the U.K. where the media seem desperate to create divisions?
I agree. As we import more and more people with no connection to our history, and indeed while our history is being rewritten and weakened, social cohesion is being eroded. kiethton said:

I last went back as a teenager in the late 90's glad I got to see it all again

So it’s all Jezza’s and his likes fault! We watched Zimbabwe collapse, and did nothing, We'll now see the same descent in SA and do nothing.

What's the betting much of the destabilising is coming from China via social media.
i thought it was an attempted coup d'etat by Zuma and his supporters?FWIW I think Ramaphosa is trying to do the right thing. However, as the US has shown in recent years, even the cleverest voters can be conned by demagoguery and snake-oil promises.

Ok, I have never been to sub Saharan Africa, so I only frame my reference through the news outlets and the South Africans I have met (all white), but are we at a point where we can say it was better, generally, during apartheid than it is now?
I discussed this with a Zimbabwean friend a while ago- he genuinely feels that it's better to be massively oppressed by fellow blacks than to be less oppressed by whites. It might be racist for him to feel this way but you have to admire his willingness to sacrifice for his beliefs.Biggy Stardust said:

When finally booted out, bloody mayhem occurs as those supporters fight tooth and nail to keep their influence.
However, what you're not seeing is a mass movement in SA calling for the reinstatement of apartheid because "things were better then", no matter how much you might like to see one.

It must be great to live a totally black and white life (pun intended), without any nuance.
More fun, I suspect, than wishing you were living in a totally white life, and not having to deal with the nuances anyway.Do you think bringing back apartheid would make SA, or the world in general, a better place?
