im after some info on the approved used bmw warranty please

im after an f10 m5 and ive been trying to secure a deal with 2 years warranty with a few dealerships but non are playing ball (frustrating as i know they did offer 2 years at one point)

i know once the 1st year runs out you get offered the chance to extend it for a monthly or one-off fee. ive played around with some quotes on the bmw warranty quote site and it seems very very expensive,i spoke to a dealer about this and he assures me that its cheaper to be invited to extend it rather than to just purchase a warranty, not sure if he is giving me a load of old rubbish just to secure a sale. can anybody confirm?

also it seems that once the car passes 60k the warranty pretty much doubles, is this the case if the car passes 60k whilst in its 1st year of the auc warranty aswell ie if i buy with 55k on it then it reaches over 60k before im offered the extension will they ask the mileage?

what about if i buy a car that already has over 60k on it, will the offered extension be at an inflated rate instead of the sub 60k price?

any other tips regarding the warranty?

cheers guys

I’ve used BMW’s AUC warranty for a number of years on various cars and I don’t believe it’s any cheaper to be ‘invited’ rather than to just go onto the warranty website and fill in the quote form.

You WILL be asked for the latest mileage when renewing after the first year going into the second (‘invite’ or not)

There is a huge jump in price after 60k miles and if you start your ownership & warranty with a car above 60k miles, you’ll pay the higher price.

Finally, I do honestly think the BMW warranty is decent value as it is very comprehensive and when I’ve needed it (but only once a few years ago in reality), my issue was rectified with no quibble. You also get recovery within that price so no AA/RAC fees to think about. Of course, you could just bung the annual fee into a bank account and hope it cover a rainy day.

Edited to add - you can also adjust your claim excess upwards to bring down your overall premium.

Invited for renewal price with the login PIN, is over 25% cheaper for me. Compared to getting a quote as a new punter.

Hmm - I could well be wrong on that bit then. Apologies.

Play with the excess to see what this does to the quote, you might well find there’s a sweet spot.

I also seem to recall that if you’re paying monthly, and start payments before 60k miles, the price doesn’t increase when you go over 60k. It’s been a while though, so that might well not be true any more…

I’ve “only” got a 650, and I wouldn’t run it without the warranty. Saves worrying about anything going wrong. I’m also well ahead at the moment - the convertible roof stopped working (stuck down) and the warranty paid over 15k to fix it.

Thanks for the input guys, the car in question is this one.

I would only cover around 3k a year in it.
There only seems to be 2 options regarding excess on the warranty either £100 or £250,I would be happy to go up to around £350 to bring the monthly payments down.

Yeap, the renewal quote is definitely cheaper than the online one you get yourself.
The >60k price jump is true as well, the way to mitigate it to an extent is to switch to monthly payments before you go over that limit.

Thanks guys for the advice, the dealer has got back to me and i can purchase a 2nd year through them @ £650 or another 2 years for £1k

seems very good that does to me, just concerned that the running in service wasnt completed until 1500 miles not 1200 miles

Nice car and the warranty negotiation sounds good to me - you’ll also have plenty of time before hitting the 60k threshold.

I could probably overlook the running-in service delay if all other aspects of the service history were bang on. I’d still try to use the oversight as an extra bargaining chip though - preferably off the price, but even down to a set of fresh carpet mats or a tank of fuel.

Good luck and I hope you get the car (and a cracking deal).

Ask the supplying dealer by email (in writing) if that will affect any warranty claims on the engine.

I'm sure a 300 mile over won't, but you want to know for sure for 1. If you need to claim, and 2. when you come to sell you might be asked/quizzed.

I looked at the monthly option and it was way more expensive than the yearly option, so much so that it was cheaper for me to go yearly and suck up the extra than pay for the monthly if I kept the car another 2 years. I'm on 40k and do about 6-8k per year. I'm sorry I don't have the numbers to hand..

I just came across this thread as i'm coming up to my 12 month ownership with my AUC M240i.

That the dealer is offering you a warranty with Car Care Plan rather than the official BMW warranty would be a no go for me. I would want the official warranty especially on an M5.

They are basically trying to cut corners to reduce your cost and sell the car.

I have no idea what went wrong, but they replaced the entire frame underneath the fabric roof. Had a small battle initially as they told me the computer said I’d driven too fast while operating the roof, meaning I wasn’t covered. Given that I hadn’t ever done that this was annoying, but an appeal and some questions about when it had been driven too fast, and how fast, moved things along.

Given the overspend and change of frame, I can only assume the whole lot had distorted somehow.

Also bear in mind that the AUC Warranty, as far as I can remember, isn't as good as the BMW Insured Warranty. SO 2 years AUC isn't necessarily all that great compared to 1yr AUC and then switching to the Insured Warranty.

The latter is worth having. We had smoking issues on an F20 125i, and it took multiple attempts to resolve. Bill was nearly 5 figures I believe as it had a new head, valves, turbos and I forget what else. For £30+/mo for the warranty we did alright!

I think you have that the wrong way around. The AUC warranty is excellent, and the BMW Insured warranty is very good, but I think the AUC covers pretty much everything (I’ve certainly had a new battery under it) whereas consumables and trim, pipes, etc. aren’t covered by the Insured warranty.

If you’re buying from BMW as an approved used car, you should get 12 months AUC warranty with it. If not, ask why, because they’re (somehow) not selling it as approved used which should probably be a red flag. When I bought my last car I could buy an extra year of AUC warranty for around £650, which I did as it was better than taking the BMW Insured warranty.

Once the AUC warranty runs out BMW will write to you to ask if you’d like to take up the BMW Insured warranty. This is the one you can get quotes for on line, and is what I have now. It’s this one that paid ~15k to fix the roof.

Edit: basically the AUC is direct from BMW when you buy a used car, and is very close to their new car warranty in terms of coverage. The BMW Insured warranty is one you can buy at any point (I think!) for a BMW once it’s out of its original warranty.

AIUI you're far more likely to run into trouble trying to get matters resolved under AUC.
