This looks seriously invasive https://www.theguardian.com/news/series/pegasus-pr...
Great opportunities for governments and criminals to have their way with you.
I guess we could all go back to non-smartphones?

I thought this was going to be about restoring a Harrier engine.

Are we meant to be surprised that governments snoop on and interfere in their digital communications?

Agreed. Why is it a surprise. Just assume everything you say or do on a mobile network or internet connection is monitored.

I have never tried the Nuclear Bomb and PMs name email trick but read about it over 10 years ago so assume everything can be monitored.

I'm not sure what anyone can do these days to prevent technology like this being used for criminal/non-legitimate purposes. Society has to weigh up the value of tech such as smart phones against the risk of that tech being used to compromise your privacy.

I use a smart phone but don't use things like Amazon smart devices, and I turn off all the "listening" helper settings on my phone too. I don't use social media apps on my phone either.

My personal view is the UK gets the balance right with protecting privacy and security services being accountable to parliament for their activities. My work regularly brings me into contact with law enforcement and intelligence agencies - robust intelligence is a key part of the UK defence against criminals and other countries who would want to disrupt or exploit our financial services and other critical infrastructure.

These issues get taken very seriously - imagine the chaos and damage if the SWIFT banking system was compromised? But I would say you can't have robust defences without gathering intelligence from the threats out there. WHO are the threats is probably a topic for another thread!

People cheerfully download and use tiktok that is nothing more than a creation by the Chinese govt to harvest as much data on users as is possible.

Its heavily promoted on many influential sites like YouTube and is a massive data mining operation.

Recently the app granted itself permission to take face scans, fingerprints, and other biometrical data from users phones but no one bats an eyelid.

We are on the cusp on a full blown information world war, and China is already fighting it.

Haven’t Western countries already done that?

Yes, and as we pull out and reduce our influence because we are realising its not necessary the right thing to do the vacuum is being filled by a far more authoritarian and repressive regime who just want really cheap lobour and that countries resources.
