Hi everyone!

I'm after some buying advice - i've fallen in love with this car once i test drove it and i'd really like to buy it. However there are a few red flags:

Service history is sporadic
144k miles
Private seller

  • *Manual Diesel***
The MOT history is good and has been well looked after mechanically - and i'm assured it will be sold to me with all known faults fixed. (I wont buy unless those terms are met) It has brand new wheels and tyres all round, MOT expires in 6 months. It's recently had a new clutch and flywheel, gearbox oil changed and a minor service. All receipts have been seen.

I'm going to run a HPI check on the car, and then send a qualified mechanic to do a full inspection and test drive of the vehicle to ensure peace of mind. I don't mind spending money on the car as its a loaded spec and something i've wanted for years - i just don't want it to be a ticking time bomb that will leave a massive hole in my pocket to repair.

If anyone has any advice/experience with these engines @ high mileage then please let me know or if anyone has any more general buying advice then please share it with me!

Diesel or petrol?

If something in your gut doesn't feel right about the car, move on. You'll soon find another, they're not particularly rare or special.

Is it the blue one on Autotrader?

The towbar and wheels would put me off. The reviews of the "dealer" would put me off.

Mind you, the fact that it's a pretty much bottom-of-the-barrel example of an ageing premium vehicle in general would put me off.

Nah it's black - with brand new asphalt grey alloys + spacers. It's loaded with extras which is why i'm considering the car at a high mileage. My initial instinct would be to stay away but after driving it it seems solid and is a beauty.

If you do a HPI and full history check, and you’re getting a mechanic to do a full inspection… then surely it comes down to the outcome of that?

I’d suggest a full service if purchased.

Yes absolutely - i'm just looking for things that i haven't thought of. Or if people own these cars/engines and could share their experience with them. As a full inspection is around £150-200 i need to be somewhat committed to the car before i spend it.

I shall do one ^ thanks!
