Watching telly yesterday and stumbled across an interesting programme about grey zone warfare https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey-zone_(internati...

We know about "hot war" and "cold war" but this grey zone seems interesting, and could perfectly answer some of the things we've seen recently that destabilises the West - such as Trump, Brexit, anti vax, the bunch of jokers in Govt etc.

Let's not turn this into a punch up about the subjects in para2, but would be good to know your thoughts on the main topic.

New name for destabilisation by internal or external forces intent on promoting their ideology.

way it has always been, shout loudly that others are dangerous unless the approach promoted is accepted

It is very much a thing. Largely caused by the west's military dominance over the last few decades, as other countries have had to adapt.

The danger is potential adversaries who may wish to disrupt have gotten pretty good at it, whilst (some would argue) the West has become complacent, and is therefore lagging behind.

"Deniable" Russian troops annexing Crimea is a good example, but the definition extends to many many smaller things (fake news, cyber attacks, chemical weapons being used on British soil etc etc)

I don’t think we have lagged behind, we have just not used them for ill, at least not publicly in the way the likes of Russia have. Our cyber strength is not something to be messed with and in terms of bio & chemical weapons Porton Down is second to none in it’s abilities. Psy-ops and “fake news” is something that has been used extensively for a long time.
