This is a (to me) pretty clever AI website, which creates images of human faces. They look real, but aren't. every time you click refresh, the AI does its thing and produces a new, unique face. Click enough times and you will see some similar ones, but they are all apparently different.

I probably should've included the website originally, so here it is)

https://thispersondoesnotexist.com

A couple of examples:

The AI obviously isn't perfect, as it seems to sometimes struggle with glasses. particularly the arm/hinge. Every so often, a quite random hat will appear...

Sometimes, the AI gets a bit... weird. WTF is that? Shoulder fingers?

And when it goes really wrong, it goes really, REALLY wrong...

There are YouTube videos explaining how it (mostly) works, but I was lost within about 30 seconds. There are also sites for art, cats, horses and chemicals. If you think the weird people ones are weird, DO NOT look at the horses.

So let's see your best (and worst) people that do not exist...

(Mods, please can this be left in The Lounge, rather than being punted to the computers or science forums? Ta)

Big ectoplasmic lump on the left is a bit odd.

I've had one or two with a trace of glasses which is odd.

But the basic effort is deeply impressive.

I'll see your serial killer and I'll raise you... I'm not quite sure what.

Isn’t it? And slightly disturbing.

As I said in the OP, don’t look at the horses…

This will come in handy for scamming single women in their fifties out of all their savings using fake dating profiles.

You’ve managed to put into words what I was thinking, “Horse is bigger/more complex than face”, basically!

My GF is a vet and specialises in cats. She pointed out straight away with the cat ones why they were “wrong”. Some of the human faces don’t look quite right either (not the obviously weird ones). It’s difficult to express exactly why they’re wrong, but there are some that just are, which shows that as good as the AI/algorithms are, they’re still not quite as good as the human brain in some areas.

I think it might be to do with facial symmetry. I seem to remember humans are “programmed” (for want of a better word) to prefer symmetry in a face, so the ones that are a bit off are less appealing/look wrong.

Fascinating subject, AI is constantly evolving and learning, incredible stuff.
On a related topic, there is a drive to lean out manufacturing within the engineering industry, introducing AI and robots to load/unload materials and finished articles, removing "people" from the equation wherever possible, the issues start to arise when decision making becomes involved, and when complex machined parts are involved, there are some interesting articles around about it, a company in America used a measuring system called a FARO arm and a robotic arm to measure complex components using an AI system, the problem was the robotic arm didn't have enough articulation to effectively measure the component due to it wanting to "rotate" the arm rather than bend like a human joint would, it was a costly mistake apparently.

Amazing. 90% of the time it's pretty good. Seems to not like it when there are more than one person in the makeup images. Very occasionally you do get a shocker though
