I just acquired this Dell Inspiron 15 5000 laptop and have plugged in an external screen.

The bigger screen works fine whilst the laptop is open but as soon as I shut it the laptop turns off.

How can I shut the laptop but still keep it running?

I have external mouse and keyboard too .

With my previous Dell I could just shut the laptop but it would carry on running via the big screen.

Right click on the battery icon in the bottom right corner, power options, choose what closing the lid does, change from "sleep" to "do nothing"

If you read the link I posted above it takes you to the advanced settings where you can set different behaviours on mains power or battery, I forgot I'd changed mine to do nothing, stuffed it in a bag and it got pretty hot before I noticed.
