So, what's with everyone starting every sentence with 'so' all of a sudden?

So, I've noticed that social media, news interviews, sports interviews, even conversations with actual human beings, everyone seems to drop in an entirely superfluous 'so' for no reason whatsoever.

So, where did it start, what's it all about, and how do we make them stop!

One of my employees does it on every sentence he sends via teams and I correct him every time. I'm sure he does it now purely to annoy me.

This is has been going on since at least the eighties.

Clarkson was the first purveyor, I seem to remember.

Just be glad we're done with, 'basically' in every sentence ever.

It isn't 'stretching the language', it's adding a completely superfluous word! If I started every sentence with 'boing', that wouldn't be 'stretching the language' would it?

Boing, beyond that, if you don't want to see conversational posts, I'd suggest that you're probably in the wrong place here!

Very irritating.

I had a placement that started every sentence with it. After continually picking him up on it, he moved onto So,... Sorry, and the start of every sentence.

It is a verbal filler instead of Umm.

I think it was John Humphrys that wanted to put 'so' into 'Room 101', presented by Frank Skinner. He argued it reasonably well, until Frank then proceeded to produce various bits of footage of John starting sentences with 'so'....... It didn't get into Room 101!
