Caught Speeding - Advice Wanted Please
Discussion
Have recently had an Intention to Prosecute notice come through asking to identify the driver of said vehicle etc.
Got picked up by an automatic camera device doing 84mph on a 70mph section of the A12 near Kelvedon in Essex at 9:30pm. Bloody silly thing to do.
Am I likely to go straight to points and fine or will the speed awareness option be available?
Previously had a clean license with no other endorsements since the 1990's.

AGTlaw used to post on here but presumably got fed up with people arguing with him....
The correct answer is;

Speed awareness most likely. £100 and a few hours of your life you won't get back.
Or possibly 3 points and a similar fine. Which if it's a SP30 (sorry, not familiar with the road) will make no difference to your insurance in all likelihood.
Annoying, but take it on the chin.
OP says A12 so it would be an SP30, he should expect to be offered the choice of a course if eligible or a FP £100 + 3 pointsOr possibly 3 points and a similar fine. Which if it's a SP30 (sorry, not familiar with the road) will make no difference to your insurance in all likelihood.

Will be offered a course (assuming A12 isn’t in Scotland?). Normally around £100. Sometimes less sometimes more. Avoids points and will learn something.
Assuming you’ve not done one before in the last three years.
If you have it will be a fixed penalty. £100 fine and three points.
If you have nine or more points it will be a court jobby.
You can do a course even if you have points on your licence as well.

So like most people of a certain age, you've been getting away with it for years, and have become complacent. Doing a speed awareness course isn't a bad punishment for 25 years of ignoring the posted speed limit. You might learn something.

SAC for that, I got caught coming out of Silverstone, first offence clean licence for 13 years, SAC cut off was 86 and I was doing 87. Pleaded guilty but asked for them to take into consideration first offence, 3 points and £100.
Why would you have gone to court for that??? Firmly in FP territoryPit Pony said:

What a sanctimonious thing to say.... Doing a speed awareness course isn't a bad punishment for 25 years of ignoring the posted speed limit. You might learn something.
Thanks all. Very helpful.
Looks as if I will get the opportunity to re-calibrate myself via a SAC.
The section of the A12 concerned is mostly dual carriageway and the slip road southbound from Kelvedon is a long sweeping climb from below the main carriageway. As I came up the slip I could see 2 HGV's doing the usual 56/57 mph thing with a nice little train of trapped cars behind them. I sped up to emerge onto the road before they arrived and then dropped back to around 70. Unfortunately the camera must have been just at the end of the slip and I missed it while looking at what was going on behind me.
I will have to be more careful in future.

OP, that was not one camera, you were in an average speed camera set-up that goes from ( roughly) Kelvedon North to just past the Rivenhall junction so you must have been way over 70 for at least 2 cameras.Unless I have miss-understood your location
Yes, but that paints the story differently. It's easier to say I didn't see the camera and I was trying to pass HGV's.Not, I belted it along an average speed camera section and now surprised I got caught.

hardly 'belting along' breaking the limit? Yes - and OP has put his hands upLosingGrip said:

Apart from seeing "A12" did you actually read the OP? He gives the location and his licence status.Assuming you’ve not done one before in the last three years.

Yes, hands are firmly held up behind the usual false faff of how one gets caught.
It happened exactly as I described it.
I was speeding, I got caught (document says "Automatic Camera Device") and I'll have to deal with the consequences.
