I'm going to be lugging a camera around abroad, taking some video.

The camera records onto relatively small SD cards (or USB SSDs) and I'll be backing up footage daily to slower 5TB drives via USB.

I'd like to do this SD card / USB SSD to via my android phone (so I don't have to carry the weight, risk the loss, etc). It's a OnePlus 7T FWIW.

Should something like this work? I've got something more like this which I plugged everything into and couldn't see any sign of the drives being mounted. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, maybe the USB cable isn't some special OTG I've, whatever that really means. Any ideas?

You need something like a WD Passport Wireless Pro. A hard drive you just insert your SD card in to.

Sort of, but with an external not internal hard drive to backup to.

I'd rather take the laptop than buy 30TB worth of those.

What about a NAS drive at home you can access over the Internet?
I have a Buffalo which does this and I have occasionally used it for this purpose

No chance of finding a decent connection to upload that much data unfortunately.

Or an external hard drive with sdcard slot perhaps?

Edit: unsure whether it would work with android

Here you go

I think that's the same thing the jackal proposed, but I've got 30TB of portable storage I'm not really looking to replace. Even more so if I'd need 30 disks!

Forgive me if I haven't followed correctly. But from the sounds of it you have the camera, SD cards and USB hard drive already and just want to transfer data?

I have a basic non wifi gopro for when in holiday and will take the SD card out and copy the footage to my phone to view it and free up the SD card space up. Having a Samsung I have the advantage of a SD slot on my phone so I have ample storage space. I don't believe your phone has a SD slot

I just have a SD card reader to USB C

And I also have a USB A to USB C adapter. Which will mount USB sticks on my phone and show them as a drive.

(just tried and it can't quite run a WD elements mechanical HDD, SSD may work but I don't have one to test)

I tend to find these adapters are very useful means I can do al sorts just using my phone.

I also have a break out unit like you have shown, with HDMI and a couple of USB A ports. It would probably be possible to connect the USB-SD and the SSD at the same time and get the phone to facilitate the transfer
