DVLA again found wanting
Discussion
The DVLA has yet again been found out for what PH has said for years.

When will the government realise the state it is in and pull us out of its misery.

My girlfriend sat with her phone and kept pressing refresh all evening into the night and all the next morning until she managed to get a driving test in 3 months time.
She was originally offered next year.
She better bloody pass it.
Currently waiting for the V5 for a secondhand car she bought. Been 5 weeks now and the council parking people want proof of ownership or she'll be getting tickets for parking outside her own house, even though she has paid for the annual permit.
Must be so many people in similar situations.

Just try and book a car theory test!
My sons one was moved 3 times then cancelled. They tell you to go online and book a new test. The website allows you to look at up to 4 months ahead. No slots available at all.

My son had no issue getting a theory test, but getting a practical test is near impossible.
He was ready to take his test when Covid hit. Since then it's been booked and cancelled multiple times for lockdowns. Theory test expiry dates were not extended so that expired and he had to retake that, as well as pay for an extra years worth of practical lessons.
The earliest practical test date he's got is December, nearly 2 years after his instructor said he was ready for the test.
That is like my youngest's tale.
Middle son waiting on Car Theory Test - No appointments available.
Youngest - Had test booked earlier this year. Moved twice and now on Aug 9th. He is more than capable of passing, but if he fails, god knows when he would get another. He has sat his CBT as a plan B so he can go down the "wheels to Work" scheme if required.
All these poor sods that have passed a Theory Test (valid 2 years) that will now be expiring because they can't get a test. I asked my MP if they would be extending the validity like they did with MOTs. He checked up and found that they had no plans to do so...
I also hear that the utterly pointless (in current form) CPC is also causing issues.

Maybe a photo of the top of any V5 with the good old "This document is not proof of ownership" section highlighted would be useful alongside the receipt?

If he passes he'll be nearly 20!
At least the insurance should be cheaper, right?

2 months I've now been waiting for them to remove the private plate on a car I've sold, which in the meantime I'm still paying to tax and is stuck at the dealers. For some unfathomable reason, if a car has been untaxed at some point in its life you can't just do the transfer online. Try and ring them and you'll get an automated message saying use the online chat. Try and use the online chat and no one will answer. But why do they need to worry about improving their service? It's not as if we could take our business somewhere else.

That's a DVSA issue, not a DVLA issue. They're separate Agencies under DfT. I'm not defending the latter as I know how useless they can be but that's like blaming the Maritime and Coastguard Agency for an MOT backlog...My sons one was moved 3 times then cancelled. Not true1. you can remove a plate from a currently taxed car on line without issue - even if there has been a "tax break" in the past
2. you can remove a plate from an untaxed car for up to 5 years after last taxed provided no break in tax/sorn status
The issue is when the DVLA "assesment process gets it's knickers in a twist" and says no then you need to speak to a human and find out why it says no

I can't believe they haven't been able to work out a way to work from home, when nearly everyone else, including other parts of the civil service (with just as much data privacy need) have. Seems like they just sent everyone home and are sat waiting it out?
Quite the opposite it seems - they wee insisting that 2,500 staff came into the office everyday. At the one point they had the most cases in a single workplace anywhere in the country.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-56647149

They are a bunch of incompetent 'tards who can't spell Ambulance correctly.
In my situation, I took a tumble down the stairs, and knocked myself out. This is classed as a head injury, and had to surrender my plastic licence, despite a clear MRI scan, letter from the Surgeon Consultant and my GP, I've been asked to go for a blood test. Except I can't go, there are no slots available. This has been going on for 2.5 years. To complicate matters, several of my wifes' colleagues have tested positive for Covid, so I couldn't attend if I wanted to. Utterly incompetent.

The DVLA's entire administration is based in paperwork. It's unreal how much paper is still required to go around the system for V5C, medical forms, legal notices. There was just no investment in a full progression to digital systems and records management.
