Hi all

I am after a new motor but one with a decent size boot for UK breaks and also fun to drive. I have narrowed it down to the 2 above but not sure of the difference/benefits from 1 to the other? Also on a budget of £5k I know these two will be reliable with being part of the VAG. Can anyone recommend one from the other? Or open to other suggestions.

Thanks

Fabia VRS engine has an absolutely dreadful reliability generally (I'm aware the later ones are better) and are all DSG too.

I'd go 2.0 Petrol, manual Octavia. Will be a pre facelift Mk2 for £5k I reckon.

The Octavia will be bigger.

The Fabia will have the 1.4 twincharger engine, I’d personally avoid it.

Reliability with VAG isn’t guaranteed, I say this as an owner, past and present..

Firstly neither of those two cars are anymore (VAG cars being more reliable is a myth now) reliable than the competition, saying that most modern cars are reliable so you can put your mind at rest.

The best steer is the Mondeo but it's also the one that be harder to find with nice spec & an engine with some poke:

Titanium X Sport 200 make sure the gearbox has been serviced as per the schedule, does it have to be an estate? The hatchback Mondeo has a huge boot especially if you're considering a Fabia.

2.5 Mazda6 170 a good car with a decent amount of go, it N/A engine makes it pretty much bulletproof.

The Twin Charged VAG engine is a brave pill choice as they have numerous well documented issues but I have known people have no issues whatsoever but they're few & far between, so stick to the Octavia.

We had a fabia vrs estate for a while. Choose the later engine version (CTHE not CAVE) and keep an eye on the oil consumption. We had no issues from that but it did break down and need a new waterpump, covered by the warranty.
It's a well packaged car, larger inside than it should be, but they still look a bit dumpy but the gearbox was hideous. I've driven a few VW DSGs in other things too and I just despise them. They checked it when it was serviced and felt it was operating as it should but the pauses in gear selection from standstill were glacial and frankly dangerous.
You can't get manual estates, like the golf r for, some reason so I wouldn't have either and I like a fast estate.

Fabia being a 1.4 only got the dry clutch DSG setup, whereas the more powerful stuff like the Golf gets a nice wet clutch box which IMHO is miles better. I've run a DQ250 wet clutch DSG for 60k and it's been fantastic. Not sure which other cars with DSG you have experienced?
