Building that could pass for a castle/abbey on film? (North)
Discussion
Hi guys,
New member but I've lurked for a long time.
We shooting a 10 second exterior scene, where a man is walking towards a medieval castle, abbey or cathedral on a hill or in the countryside.
We are making a short film on the theme of dementia and have managed to get all our locations apart from this one.
As it's summer, most places don't want any filming with crowds around, they want us to wait until winter.
However, we were trying to think outside the box and maybe go for a building that from a distance might pass for a castle. Even if it was a ruin, perhaps from one corner, it might look ok.
We are based in West Yorkshire but are prepared to travel around for 1-2 hours each way, if anyone has any ideas?

Jervaulx sprang to mind to me too. I believe it is family owned, and has always been pretty quiet when we have been there. Byland Abbey is right next to the road. I thought it was freely accessible but it seems to be 10am-5pm now. Given that the only limits to access are a lowish stone wall, I'm not sure how rigid access controls are. I think Bolton Abbey is freely accessible as there is a church inside it, but that is quite popular. Sandal castle near Wakefield is very ruined but with open access.
A bit further out, Pendragon Castle at Kirkby Stephen is privately owned and easy to get to. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendragon_Castle

Another vote for Bolton Castle near Leyburn in North Yorkshire https://www.boltoncastle.co.uk/ you wouldn't even need to go into the castle grounds as it can been seen from roads within the village.
