Quick question - how close is an Air fryer to a full on deep fat fryer?

Yesterday was one of the very rare occasions that my wife fried chips rather than make them in the oven and they were delicious. I've heard that an Air fryer is nearly as good but with all the health benefits of oven chips. Is this true or am i better off sticking with oven chips?

Started with a cheap air fryer then upgraded to a Ninja, the one with two drawers. Won't have chips any other way now. No need to add oil for oven chips, just put them in on Air Fry mode, 180c for 14mins. Usually put chicken or fish in the other drawer

Thanks both

How do they compare to home-made fried chips?

That's what I have. Was cheaper in Prime sale so got it then. Also reheats pain au chocolat or croissants so they are oven fresh again very well

I have a tefal air fryer, really useful for chips/breaded chicken/fish, good at heating up takeaway left overs too.

Next time you go to the chippy, order extra chips.

Freeze in portions and use them as oven chips, cook in an airfryer.

Suggested by another PHer, best "oven chips" you can get wink

Have the same one here. Great being able to do two different things at once, the "sync" feature has a few quirks but most of the time it works well.

Why don't I just go back to the Chippy the next time I want chippy chips.....? I must be missing something - I'm confused as to why I would get something fresh, then freeze it, then re-cook it, when I could just miss out the last two steps by going back to the chippy?

I find chip shop chips disappointing. They're often a bit soggy and not crisp. Reheated the next day in the oven gets them to where I want them, an element of crunch and good taste.

McCain skin on fries in an air frier. I have no idea why this combination tastes so good.

Iceland do a "Ridiculously Crispy" range of chips, fries etc that are some of the best I've tried done in the air fryer - really light in the middle with a brilliant crunch to the coating. As much as i like "proper" deep fried chips I much prefer the Iceland ones, well worth trying if you can can go at a time when it;s not overrun by ferals letting their sawn off savages run wild.

Oven chips taste like oven chips however you cook them and some are obviously better than others. However, they go crispy in the air fryer in a manner you just can't replicate with an oven. Highly recommended - wouldn't be without ours.

We bought a Ninja air fryer from Costco earlier this year - wouldn't be without it now. Doing regular oven chips in it does yield better results than cooking them in a conventional oven, I can't stand oven chips normally but they're OK in the AF. That's missing a trick though, "proper" chips are in a different league. Chop up the spuds (leave skin on if desired), soak them in water for 30 mins, pat them dry, put in a bowl and toss with a little veg/rapeseed oil, add salt and whatever else to taste (cajun spice, Peri Peri etc.) and do them in the fryer - mega. Better taste than deep-fry and almost none of the fat.

Plenty of other uses for one too, bacon turns out really well for a start. Loads of meat and veg stuff you can cook in it. The Ninja one has a dehydration feature too, Mrs. 8 likes drying out slices of lemon, lime, pink grapefruit etc. to pop in a G&T, which means not chopping out once slice of whatever and then the rest of it going to waste if she doesn't have a gin for a while.

Bought one of these a few months ago from Amazon although doesn't look like the sell it anymore.

Anything frozen tastes great and better than frying, no oil needed and it's faster than a normal oven.

Fish fingers get nice and crispy on the outside which I could never get on my previous oven just like back in the day when you made them flame grilled on that shelf that was above the hob.

Oven chips and jacket potatoes, crispy on the outside, nice fluffy potato inside.

Frozen pizza is great and not sloppy.

Mrs makes cakes and buns which turn out brilliant.

Meat comes out so nice and juicy.

It can also do dried fruit

Probably the best and most used thing in our kitchen.

I have a tefal actifry after a similar thread like this where people rave about air fryers. It’s crap and takes up a lot of space in the cupboard - completely overhyped rubbish!

At the cheapo end of the scale <ahem> Have any of you chip aficionados tried the basket / mesh thing in a normal oven before you progressed to air friers! Do they make any difference?
Quickachips etc. They’re only cheap I think I saw them in a supermarket
