AUDI 1.4 150 bhp CoD engine.
Discussion
THinking of changing my motor, and one of the cars I am interested in is a '66 reg A3 TSI, 1.4 150 CoD. Have experience of 1.4 125 TSI engine in a A3, and it feels perky enough and reliability is OK, good mpg too. Now how intrusive is the CoD, when it drops onto 2 cylinder mode ? Is the engine full cambelt or still the chain/cambelt combo, and whats the interval for changing. Ta.
I did 86k miles in four years in a Golf with the same engine & DSG. Had no issues with the engine, got 46mpg average (sadly worked out tank to tank on a spreadsheet & not OBC), only issue was what I think was the dim witted DSG making pulling onto roundabouts a sometimes hair raising experience.
It was a company car but I’d happily spend my own money on one. And the two cylinder mode was almost imperceptible, I use to like opening the window when it was doing so alongside a building as you could then hear it.
Fairly certain it’s chain only, certainly never had a replacement & mine being a company car was fully maintained by the VW dealer.

Ran one in an A3 lease for 3 years. Liked it enough that we bought a Seat Leon with the same engine.
I'm not long back from a holiday to Yorkshire in it. Averaged 52 MPG on the way down, and due to heavy traffic only 48 MPG on the way back. That's with the car fully loaded and carrying 4 persons.
They are belt driven. The range of recommendations for when this belt should be changed is vast depending on region and manufacturer.
UK brands seem to recommend 5 years or 60k Iiirc, whereas the same brands in Europe recommend every 10 years or 120k.

I have a 2018 Seat Leon with the 1.4TSi (150) & DSG. It's a great engine. As has already been said the change to 2-cylinder mode is very difficult to sense - I can't. I only know by the symbol in the instrument cluster being illuminated. Have seen 2-cylinder mode being used at 65mph on a level dual-carriage.
I did consider the 1.8 180hp in the Leon but don't regret buying the 1.4 . Very rarely feel that more performance is required.
Average mpg over 10k miles is 45mpg. A recent 4-1/2 hour, 265 mile journey from Stroud (Gloucestershire) to Keswick (Lake District) saw 53mpg. Cruising at or slightly above speed limits.
