Seems like my new Samsung TV is unable to play some .avi and mkv files (strange as my old one can). What I can ascertain it's the audio that is the issue.
Would playing through PLEX be a possible remedy?
Anyone recommend a free (or inexpensive) conversion software that could fix it?

Great, thanks.

I'll have a look at it, but at the moment VLC is doing a reasonable job of smaller files.

I find Vidcoder a watered down simpler to use version of Handbrake works great for me.

To be fair had so many issues with playback on a TV I do it via a fire tv and kodi installed (not the free streams guv) type of Kodi. I mean the barebones one.
It just works n matter what is thrown at it. On a Samsung TV i got some videos without audio some that refused to play at all. I had some that will play but you cannot fast foreward or rewind (this being from a network drive) yet they would fast foreward rewind if on a local usb drive or stick
The Fire TV just plays everything
