My wife's 2012 Smart car roof has started to peel.

The Smart Forums are suggesting a vinyl wrap as the easiest solution but beneath the peeling surface (which seem to be a factory coating which has become brittle and is flaking) is looks quite textured.

Can you wrap a surface with some texture?

No direct experience but that sounds like a bad idea. Even if the wrap can hide the uneven bits, what will it look like when more of the original paint starts flaking off under the wrap?

It’ll still show through, the vinyl will only be as smooth as the surface underneath. If you had to go this way the best option would be something like a textured carbon fibre effect vinyl with a matt finish, it’ll hide more of the imperfections.

Yes most people on the forums are suggesting the carbon effect.

At the moment I have just two areas of about 10cm x 10 xm at the two rear corners of the roof.

There are lots of other texture effect wrap vinyls now available if you go down this route. Carbon obviously tends to have the straight weave effect to it that can struggle to hide imperfections.
You can get unidirectional carbon effect, as well as lots of others.
Some of the Hexis brand wrap tends to be quite thick. Any wrap company worth their salt will quickly be able to tell you if the vinyl will stick; areas that are slightly borderline can be helped with adhesion promoters and things like 3m primer 94.

That is great, the messages I have left havent been ansered, i guess a Smart Car roof isnt worth that much to them but I will follow it up.
