Where to go from IT?
Discussion
Hello all
I've worked in IT for the last 10 years and for the most of it, I have enjoyed being in a techie environment. But as I've become older, I want more of an active job. Being sedentary for 8hrs a day at home is taking its toll on me mentally.
I would like to still stay in a technical job, but include some of my interests. Like most on here (if not all?), I love cars and well, anything with an engine.
I'm a dab hand at programming, but come from a network engineering background. I'd like to move my skillset onto something in the automotive industry, or what kind of jobs there are available.
I literally do not know if this is even possible, so I thought I would ask on here to see if anyone else has moved away from a desk job and how they got on.
Thanks
NG

Trying to maintain a bit of salary, I would look at moving to control engineering. Lots of opportunity to do a bit of hands on stuff whilst remaining technical.
Thank you for your suggestion. I can't say I have heard of control engineering, but after a quick google, it looks like something I could apply my current skillset to and like you say, maintain a bit of my salary. colin79666 said:
How about antenna/mobile maintenance? A growing area with the 5G rollout requiring more masts. Some travel involved, relates to networking.
This is exactly the industry I would love to get into. I'm a keen climber, which I know doesn't fully translate into climbing a mast, but being comfortable at height would do. Any tips on getting into this industry?
Thanks for your suggestion
