The Nokia 6310 has returned
Discussion
Todays news is one of the greatest (retro) phones of all times is coming back... The Nokia 6310
(OK, I admit to a bit of rose tinted memory of these... but Yey).
https://www.nokia.com/phones/en_int/nokia-6310
You may remember a few years ago Nokia (name now used by HMD global), released a new version of the Nokia 8810 4G, then the Nokia 2720, now the 6310
.
When I seen the article I thought they would do what they did with the 8810 4g i.e. 4G, basic internet, whatsapp, and add a basic camera, but I thought the 8810 4G feels a bit flimsy, so make it feel a little more robust; more like the robust original that I still have in a drawer somewhere?
I even bought a 8810 4G a year or two ago and is an emergency phone that lives in the car (on PAYG), and I probably would have bought one of these too
.
Unlike its 8810 4G sibling, it appears to only be 2G (I would be very happy if someone proved me wrong on this); just like its ancestor 20 years ago... okkkkay..
Has a smaller battery than the 8810 4G (but that might be OK, perhaps they made it less power hungry? will have to wait and see for that one...
but has a 0.3MP camera!!! oh come on Nokia/HMD, you put a 2MP camera in the 8810, why couldn't you bring that across? and improve a little, as it has been a few years, maybe a 5MP camera? even the 3310 has a 2MP, and that was a really basic phone back in the day!
Bit disappointed,
given the fact I have rose tinted spectacles regarding Nokia phones that I had when I was young, they could have made more of this and asked for more than £50; I would have bought one then
So I don't get this, they could have warmed over the 8810 Spec and chucked it into something that resembled a 6310 case with a bigger screen, charged about £100, but NOOOOOO, so why are they are using the 6310 name? presumably in the hope I will buy one because I had one 20 years ago and I am bored stupid working from home? and that probably would have worked to some extent for a warmed over 8810., but 2G with such a poor camera?
Why have you done this to me Nokia?
OK Rant over

When I was a young teenager my dad had these and I got the old one when he upgraded (remember 12 month contracts being the norm?)
Beautiful phones, if I had use for a phone to JUST make calls on I'd buy one tomorrow. Perfect size/shape/weight. Used to see them utterly everywhere. before RIM took hold every self respecting businessman had a 6310i it seemed
Clicking the link though it looks nothing like it... just re-using the name for nostalgia as others have mentioned above!

There are some that don't want connectivity and use a phone for the sole purpose of making calls and messages.
Think security may be tighter limited ot 2g?
Pointless for the majority of folk.....
Not in the developing world which is the primary market for Nokia feature phonesThink security may be tighter limited ot 2g?

I've got a box full of the originals still. I also have the 8810 4G and 3310 remake, neither are very good.
I too had the 3310 remake a few years ago bought as a stop gap phone when my smart phone was stolen, I quite like the novelty for about a week but then I realised how frustrating I found it not having a proper smart phone and the 3310 now sits in the kitchen drawer where occasionally I take it out and threaten to give it to my daughter. Not very good and as a burner phone there are cheaper options available
I was looking on eBay today, you can get an old "new" Nokia 3310 with charger for £12.99, I might treat myself to a bit of nostalgia.

No thanks, I still have my old 6310i in good working order.
This is one of the reasons I liked them; they are still working 20 years later, my 6210 is working fine, the 6310 (although slightly newer, probably had a much harder life), is becoming a little temperamental.I just think why call it by a name they haven't used in 20 years, if the main market is not the west, would other regions have the same history of the 6310 name?

My dad still uses an original 6310i and has just bought a refurbished one for 50 quid.
Reminds me that when I got mine in 2000 or so, I bought it in the Watford Harlequin centre along with something else that had a staple in the packaging. By the time I'd got to the car the whole screen was scratched. I was gutted.

If I were Nokia, I would probably have released a 'teaser' phone first like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Worlds-Smallest-Mobile-Bl...
And then a fully functioning one later.

The phone are not made by Nokia anymore. A company was formed in 2016 by a couple of Ex Nokia guys to buy the phone company from Microsoft who had purchased it a few years earlier. The sale included a number of the old number names. Some of them not so famous in the U.K. which are now used for their feature phones and some of the well known names which they use for special editions. The smartphones and then numbered and dotted with generation so 8.2 etc.Edited by GrizzlyBear on Saturday 7th August 13:51
The company, HMD global have just launched a virtual phone network in the U.K. piggybacking on EE with the aim to make the name more well known. The rights to use the Nokia brand are up for renewal in 2026 and the aim is to get HMD well known enough by then to move over to their own branding
