GT86 if you’re a driver. Fab car for the enthusiast at that price with a nod to practicality

edit. As others, Meg over Golf if you didnt go GT86

Depends if you want a semi decent interior or not.

I'd go for the GT86, but the Megane is a great shout as well I reckon.

GT86 is a two person car you can stick a toddler in the back of in a pinch. If that's family friendly enough then go for it.

How much semi-family fo you need to fit in?
I’d go for the Gt86 if there’s enough space

I use my GT86 to take a 10 and a 12 year old child to school in. They both fit in the rear seats though I'm only 5'6 so don't have the drivers seat that far back. Boot is fine for school bags and shopping. Running costs are fine, Toyota reliability, goes sideways on wet roundabouts at low speeds - brilliant fun car that's just practical enough. Would get eaten alive by a Golf GTi in performance terms but that's not really the point.

Mk3 interior is pretty good. I would put it on a par with a contemporary Golf. Or above with Recaros.

£10k buys a late mk7 fiesta st3.

In fact my 66 plate was only £9K last year from main dealer but it does have high miles.

I thought long and hard about a gt86 having had a celica t sport in the past which I loved. In the end I couldn't stomach the fact they they are still ridiculously expensive and the engine is a bit weak.

Awesome - thanks everyone! Think I'll go and test drive a GT86 and see how I like it wobble

Never really got on with my GT86 so make sure you have a decent test drive. Also at 5'11" no one could sit behind me including my 5 year old.

The rear seat space was the sticking point for me too - just not enough legroom for my 7 year old at the time

Will all depend on how tall driver/front seat passenger are

Get the family along on your test drive

Guy I know has a GT86 and I was pretty underwhelmed when he gave me a lift in it.

He put his foot down and it felt like it was actually less than 200 bhp!

I know the GTI may not be any faster but it will probably feel faster and also you'll be thankful of the 5 doors.
IMO the GTI is the best all rounder you can buy and it has tartan seats!

I would say gti usually but 10k is in a bit of a no mans land to buy one i.e it won't get you a mk7, and you will probably also struggle to get a late 11/12 plate mk6 which have the revised timing chain (tensioner?). If you don't mind going older the edition 30 seems to be holding it's value, or save a few grand and get a really nice standard mk5, which will be 250bhp with a simple remap.

If it has to be a bit family friendly then it would be the Astra GTC VXR it's a smidge behind the RS265 with the Cup Chassis but is an engaging steer to as well as being nice place to be:

Or lookout for an Infiniti Q60.
