I have, but it totally depends.

You have to do your due diligence.

Although Chrono24 do hold your payment in escrow until you have received the watch and confirm you are happy, so there is at least a level of protection.

ive bought privately from Chrono24 twice, one from france, one from denmark or norway. Regardless, it was a perfect transaction each time

When looking at private sales on chrono24 recently I’m sure it said something along the lines of the seller has ‘no legal obligation to accept returns’ and to negotiate returns with the seller. Not sure if this means sold as seen type stuff, but it gave me pause for thought. I know distance selling for dealers doesn’t apply though regarding returns if not suitable (or for any reason).

I’m selling my first watch on Chrono24 at the minute and you do have to put a lot of security type info with a couple of photos to show the watch at specific times. I know it’s not the be all and end all in security but it seems more rigorous than the likes of other auction sites.

Used it twice for purchases from Germany (£1300) and Italy (£1700). No issues. As mentioned, do your due diligence.

What due diligence would one do when buying from a private seller on C24?

I sold my Omega last year using Chrono24. It was seamless. I was made an offer by a German dealer which was more than I was expecting. He arranged the postage and insurance and the money was held in escrow until the watch was delivered and inspected. The money was released the next day. Very happy.

I have, a few times, never had a problem. Usual caveats - message, chat if you can, etc.

Anyone know what are the VAT implications on buying from the EU, either new or secondhand?

VAT is due on imports from the EU. It doesn't make any difference if the goods are new or not.

It pays to only make your payments through the site. I had a scammer try to sell a Reverso they didn't own and they emailed with their bank details. I used the escrow and lo and behold the transaction didn't happen. Chrono24 promptly refunded me.
