Should I just buy a Golf GTI?
Discussion
Moving house soon (if b*st*rd estate agents stop lying through their teeth) and very likely to need a second car to cover 7-8 mile commute to and from train station around 3-4 times a week.
47 wks commuting suggests around 2350 - 2500 miles, but double that as it'll no doubt get used for child ferrying etc. It'll need 5 doors and 5 seats plus isofix. And it must be entertaining. Fuel efficiency is a bonus, but not a dealbreaker and SWMBO has a pathological hatred of BMWs.
I'll likely have a cash pot of £7-9k which puts me squarely in Mk.6 GTI territory, but after any other left field suggestions.
Things under consideration:
1. Newer Fiesta ST3
2. Swift Sport (but is it too plasticky?)
3. Some other VAG option on same Golf platform
4. Something bigger older and V8-ier
5. Impreza of some form (but this may annoy new neighbours)
Thoughts welcome!

With such a tiny mileage, surely that's an opportunity for something nice and juicy - I saw some loon in readers cars bought a Cayenne 4.5S station car - you should follow suit
This has crossed my mind. Is it wrong to think a 5.0 R Class Mercedes makes sense? I’m not sure it counts as ‘fun’, but with a Capristo style exhaust, it could be funNY?
Or a B7 S4 4.2 V8 - though slightly concerned about timing chain nonsense?
